Volcano lava river runs into Guatemala village, several killed Posted: 03 Jun 2018 04:48 PM PDT By Sofia Menchu GUATEMALA CITY (Reuters) - At least six people were killed and another 20 injured on Sunday when Guatemala's Fuego volcano erupted violently, spewing a stream of red hot lava and belching a thick plume of black smoke and ash that rained onto the capital and other regions. There are injured, burned and dead people," Sergio Cabanas, the general secretary of Guatemala's Conred disaster agency, said on radio. "Not everyone escaped, I think they were buried," Consuelo Hernandez told local news outlet Diario de Centroamerica in a video. |
Philippines' Duterte tells UN expert to 'go to hell' Posted: 02 Jun 2018 09:40 PM PDT President Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday told a United Nations rights expert to "go to hell" over criticism of the Philippine leader for threatening the country's top judge. Duterte's latest profanity-laced diatribe came after Diego Garcia-Sayan, the UN special rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers, said the president's statements against former chief justice Maria Lourdes Sereno were a "vicious attack" on the judiciary. Sereno's colleagues voted to remove her from office last month, shortly after Duterte openly called her his "enemy" and demanded her swift ouster. |

The lava flow left Kapoho and the adjacent development of Vacationland cut off from the rest of the island by road, according to the Hawaii County Civil Defense agency. |

The turtle was seized by the Idaho State Department of Agriculture after the incident on 7 March and has since been "humanely euthanised" because it is considered an invasive species. When the initial story was first reported, Mr Crosland was described as "a bully who should not be allowed near impressionable young people" by the UK charity People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta). |

Netanyahu warns Merkel of new refugee crisis sparked by Iran Posted: 04 Jun 2018 10:11 AM PDT Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned German Chancellor Angela Merkel Monday that Iranian meddling in the Middle East could touch off massive new refugee flows to Europe, as they clashed about the future of the nuclear deal with Tehran. At the start of a three-day European tour dominated by strategic differences on Iran, Netanyahu charged that Tehran has been able to bankroll a growing military presence in countries such as Syria and Yemen because sanctions had been lifted in exchange for its halt in nuclear enrichment activities. Iran wants to "basically conduct a religious campaign in largely Sunni Syria but try to convert Sunnis," he said at a joint press conference with Merkel. |
Guatemalans recall terror of eruption Posted: 04 Jun 2018 10:17 AM PDT Sitting on the floor of the community shelter where he and his family found refuge, Manuel Lopez breathed a sigh of relief Monday after his close call with Guatemala's deadly Fuego volcano. Barefoot, with his wife and two-month-old daughter sleeping on a blanket by his side, the 22-year-old recalled the terror that gripped his family as a tide of boiling mud and ash suddenly swept into their hillside home. The floor of the community hall in Escuintla, some 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of the Guatemalan capital, is temporary home to 272 people, including many children, who managed to outrun a surge of fiery rock and scalding mud when Fuego exploded on Sunday. |

California city fights poverty with guaranteed income Posted: 04 Jun 2018 03:11 AM PDT By Jane Ross STOCKTON, Calif. (Reuters) - Michael Tubbs, the 27-year-old mayor of Stockton, California, has a radical plan to combat poverty in his cash-strapped city: a "no strings" guaranteed basic income of $500 a month for its residents. Starting in early 2019, Tubbs plans to provide the monthly stipend to a select group of residents as part of a privately funded 18-month experiment to assess how people use the money. "And then, maybe, in two or three years, we can have a much more informed discussion about the social safety net, the income floor people deserve and the best way to do it because we'll have more data and research," Tubbs told Reuters. |

There was no immediate comment from Palestinian officials on the incident, which comes at a time of renewed violence along the Israel-Gaza frontier. |

Russia wants 'united and prosperous EU': Putin Posted: 04 Jun 2018 01:54 PM PDT President Vladimir Putin on Monday downplayed suggestions Russia was seeking to disrupt the European Union's cohesion, saying it was in his country's interests for the bloc to remain "united and prosperous". "We have an interest in an EU that's united and prosperous, since the EU is our most important commercial and economic partner," Putin told Austria's ORF television a day before an official visit to Vienna. "The more problems at the heart of the EU, the more risks and problems there are for us. |

Posted: 03 Jun 2018 10:44 AM PDT On Friday, a judge unsealed parts of the arrest warrant for Joseph DeAngelo - the 72-year-old former police officer who is accused of committing serial rape and murder across California beginning 40 years ago. The heavily redacted document describes how police finally found the Golden State Killer suspect by his DNA — tracking Mr DeAngelo through a genealogy website and rooting through his trash. The Golden State Killer was one of the most prolific predators in US history, sometimes invading different houses on consecutive nights, sometimes returning to the same neighbourhood so often that the people who lived there slept in shifts. |

New Mexico, Colorado wildfires force hundreds to evacuate Posted: 02 Jun 2018 08:28 PM PDT (Reuters) - Wildfires stoked by low humidity and high temperatures raged in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado on Saturday, threatening nearly 1,900 homes and forcing the evacuation of hundreds of residents from remote communities, fire officials said. The two fires, about 250 miles (400 km) apart in the drought-parched Four Corners region of the Southwestern United States, have consumed nearly 32,000 acres (12,000 hectares)between them, officials said. The larger of the two, the so-called Ute Park Fire in Colfax County, New Mexico, was zero percent contained after scorching some 30,000 acres by Saturday evening near Cimarron, a town of about 1,100 people northeast of Santa Fe, according to a bulletin on the New Mexico Fire Information website. |

Qatar crisis creates 'new' Gulf with no winners Posted: 02 Jun 2018 08:27 PM PDT The year-old acrimonious dispute between Qatar and its neighbours is forging a "new" Gulf, potentially transforming what was a stable region of the Arab world, experts warn. It has shattered old alliances and rendered the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council practically obsolete, pushing Qatar towards Turkey and Iran. "In its impact on the regional unit in the Arab Gulf, the crisis is likely to be as disruptive and as era-defining as Saddam Hussein's invasion and occupation of Kuwait was in 1990," said Kristian Ulrichsen, a fellow at Rice University's Baker Institute. |

"From some European countries we get the message that they expect the Iranian people to both tolerate the sanctions, deal with the sanctions, and go along with them and give up our nuclear energy activities and continue with the restrictions," he told an audience in a Tehran suburb. Khamenei was speaking nearly a month after President Donald Trump announced the United States was pulling out of the landmark Iran nuclear deal. |
