Trump, Europeans call Saudi account of Khashoggi death inadequate Posted: 20 Oct 2018 10:47 PM PDT Saudi Arabia said early on Saturday that Khashoggi, a critic of the country's de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, had died in a fight inside the building. Germany called that explanation "inadequate" and questioned whether countries should sell arms to Saudi Arabia, while France and the European Union urged an in-depth investigation to find out what happened to the Washington Post columnist after he entered the consulate on Oct. 2 for documents for his marriage. Turkish officials suspect Khashoggi, a Saudi national and U.S. resident, was killed inside the consulate by a team of Saudi agents and his body cut up. |

World’s Longest Sea Bridge Brings China Closer to Hong Kong Posted: 22 Oct 2018 02:00 PM PDT The $15 billion, 55-kilometer (34-mile) bridge, which Xinhua says is the world's longest sea link, opens for business at 9 a.m. Wednesday and is tipped to carry some 29,000 cars and trucks daily between Zhuhai on the mainland and Hong Kong, a former British colony. It also envisions a better marriage between China's industrial might and its one-party state and the liberal, capitalist bastions of Hong Kong and Macau, which have their own passports, currencies, trade policies, courts and civil rights. The Greater Bay Area could serve as a new growth engine for the capital markets of Hong Kong, the casinos of Macau, formerly a Portuguese colony, and nearby Shenzhen, the economic powerhouse one of Xi's predecessors, Deng Xiaoping, built on their doorstep almost four decades ago. |

Midterms 2018: More candidates using anti-muslim rhetoric than ever - but it's not working Posted: 22 Oct 2018 03:51 PM PDT This midterm election season American voters have seen a growing number of candidates - nearly all Republican - smearing their political opponents either as terrorism threats or with Islamophobic rhetoric. On Monday, ahead of the midterm Election Day, Muslim Advocates, a legal advocacy group in Oakland, California, released their Running on Hate 2018 report noting a sharp increase in anti-Muslim rhetoric from election campaigns in the state and local level. In the report, Muslim Advocates observed and analysed more than 80 candidates that used Islamophobic narratives in their campaigns. |

Thousands in U.S.-bound migrant caravan pour into Mexican city Posted: 22 Oct 2018 02:21 AM PDT Members of the caravan, exhausted from the hours-long trek on foot from the Guatemalan border, mostly ignored police offers to board buses heading to a migrant shelter because of suspicions they might be deported instead. The migrants have defied threats by Trump that he will close the U.S.-Mexico border if the caravan advances, as well as warnings from the Mexican government that they risk deportation if they cannot justify seeking asylum in Mexico. On Sunday, Trump said on Twitter that "full efforts are being made to stop the onslaught of illegal aliens," arguing that the migrants must apply for asylum in Mexico before attempting to petition U.S. authorities. |
