Elephants loose on Spanish motorway after circus lorry overturns Posted: 02 Apr 2018 11:08 AM PDT One elephant died and several others ended up loose on a Spanish motorway on Monday after the circus lorry they were in overturned. Police had to close the A30 in Pozo Canada near Albacete south east of Madrid after the extraordinary crash. Motorists filmed the animals strolling towards waste ground and feeding by the side of the road. The dead animal was removed from a ditch by the side of the motorway where its body ended up following the drama around 4pm. Motorists in Spain were treated to the extraordinary sight of elephants grazing by the side of the road after a circus lorry carrying at least five of the animals overturned Credit: ASA Police released pictures of the elephants appearing to feed on grass by crash barriers before being led to a safer area. They revealed, in a tweet: "The A30 has been closed because a lorry has overturned. Elephants are loose on the tarmac. "The motorway has been closed around the Pozo Canada area heading towards Murcia." The accident is believed to have happened after the HGV they were in overtook another vehicle and the driver lost control as he headed back into the slow lane. One of the elephants - pictured lying in a ditch by the roadside after the crash - died, but the other elephants - and the lorry driver - survived unharmed Credit: ASA Spain's Road Safety Authority the DGT confirmed one of the elephants had died in the incident. Four other animals escaped the crash with their lives along with the driver of the vehicle. Two of the four-legged survivors are said to have suffered injuries although it was not immediately clear how serious they were. DGT spokesman Gregorio Serrano said: "The elephants injured in the accident that has happened in Albacete are being assisted and removed. "Of the five animals one has died and two have been injured. Shortly the A30 will be reopened." The crash happened on the A30 near the city of Albacete Credit: ASA One stunned motorist, who filmed the animals wandering around on the tarmac seconds after the accident, said in a running commentary over his home-made video: "Accident on the A30 motorway near Albacete. "A circus lorry has overturned. Four elephants are loose and one looks in a very bad way. I'm not sure if it's dead or not." Silvia Barquero, the president of Spanish animal welfare political party PACMA, said the animals belonged to the Gottani Circus, which has performed several shows in the area over Easter. She tweeted: "The lorry that has overturned was carrying Circo Gottani elephants. Show them more kindness. We treat animals like slaves. Enough of circuses that use animals." There was no immediate response from the circus owners. Civil Guard officers will now send a report on the accident to a local investigating judge who will be tasked with a routine probe into the incident. |

British and American soldiers killed in Syria were on mission to capture Isil member, Pentagon says Posted: 02 Apr 2018 12:41 PM PDT A British and an American soldier killed in Syria last week were on a secret mission to kill or capture a member of the Islamic State of Iraq in the Levant (Isil), the Pentagon has confirmed. Master Sgt. Jonathan Dunbar, from Austin, Texas, and Sgt. Matt Tonroe, a SAS sniper from Manchester, died in an improvised explosive devise blast in Manbij, Syria. The pair was killed and five other troops wounded on March 30. Few details have been released about the circumstances, but Major Adrian Rankine-Galloway, a Pentagon spokesman, said on Monday that they died in the top secret mission. The US military has not said whether the IED was in a building, a vehicle or buried in the road. The troops were out of their vehicles at the time of the explosion, according to a US official. There is also no word on whether the target was found and captured or killed. One indicator of the sensitivity of the mission was that Dunbar was identified publicly by the Army only as being "assigned to Headquarters, U.S. Army Special Operations Command, Fort Bragg, N.C." That specific language has been used in the past when troops killed in action have actually been part of the Army's elite Delta Force, a counterterrorism unit that is not publicly identified. CNN reported that Dunbar was assigned to Delta. Delta Force and the Naval Special Warfare Development Group - popularly known as Seal Team Six - are among the so-called Tier One units that specialise in high-risk counterterrorism and hostage rescue missions that are rarely acknowledged. Special operations forces have been in the Manbij area recently looking for high-value Isil operatives that may have fled to the area, the US official said. There are currently around 2,000 US troops in Syria, who mostly work with local allies fighting Isil. On Thursday President Donald Trump said that the US would "be coming out of Syria, like, very soon". It later emerged that he had suspended the funds for a $200 million stabilisation project in the country. His remarks caught military leaders off guard, and were strongly criticised by Lindsey Graham, Republican senator for South Carolina. Mr Graham warned that pulling out of Syria now, with Isil on the run, would be "the single worst decision" that the president could make. |

Posted: 03 Apr 2018 10:44 AM PDT Police responding to a shooting incident on the campus of US tech giant YouTube said a woman found dead with self-inflicted gunshot wounds was the likely attacker, bringing to an end a massive security operation in California's Silicon Valley. At least three other people were found with injuries and were taken to hospital during the incident on Tuesday afternoon in San Bruno, around 10 miles south of San Francisco. Three people suffered gunshot wounds and one believed to have an ankle injury, according to San Bruno Police Chief Ed Barberini. |
Oklahoma, Kentucky teachers skip school as frustration boils over Posted: 02 Apr 2018 01:51 PM PDT School teachers in Oklahoma and Kentucky walked off the job on Monday to protest cuts in pay, pensions and benefits, as discontent over years of sluggish spending on public education spilled over in two more U.S. states and threatened to spread. The walkout shut down schools in Oklahoma, where teachers are among the lowest-paid in the nation. In Kentucky, schools were closed either for spring vacation or to allow educators to protest in the state capital, Frankfort, the state's teachers union said. |
Sinister Apple phone prank just won Twitter, Easter, and April Fool's Day Posted: 02 Apr 2018 07:10 AM PDT This year Easter occurred on April 1, turning Easter baskets and bunny suits into the perfect opportunity for parents to prank their kids. We've already covered a few possible pranks for this bizarre crossover holiday, but comedian and apparent dad-joker Joe Heenan executed one of the meanest pranks yet. SEE ALSO: Find out which Easter candy is the most popular — or polarizing — in your state #AprilFoolsDayTold my son I got him an Apple phone for Easter pic.twitter.com/6oMO9mPWC3 — joe heenan (@joeheenan) April 1, 2018 Creating the ultimate dad joke/prank, Heenan gave his excited son an Apple iPhone box, which was disappointingly filled with a literal apple. The Apple phone pun has become one of the most retweeted April Fool's pranks this year, largely because of the poor kid's face. He ages 30 years between the two photos, falling from near disbelief to complete annoyance. Considering his dad is a standup comedian, the poor guy has probably witnessed enough dad jokes to last several lifetimes' worth of bad Easter jokes. He should have known he's way too young for an iPhone, and to get such a pricey gift on Easter (sorry, Jesus)?! Nope. But one can dream... and promptly have those dreams crushed for retweets. It's OK little dude, one day you'll get to choose your dad's retirement home. WATCH: Can your puppers hold an egg in its mouth without breaking it? |
US-backed fighters on high alert in Syria's Manbij Posted: 02 Apr 2018 09:37 PM PDT On the outskirts of Syria's Manbij, Kurdish-led fighters have dug trenches and US-led coalition soldiers patrol from land and sky after Turkey threatened to overrun the northern city. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has repeatedly threatened to launch an attack on the city, near which US troops are stationed as part of their support to a Kurdish-led alliance fighting jihadists. Pro-Ankara Syrian rebels control territory to the north and west of the city held by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) alliance. |

'Affluenza' Texan, who killed four driving drunk, released from jail Posted: 02 Apr 2018 12:52 PM PDT A Texan who killed four people while driving drunk as a teen, then avoided prison by blaming his wealthy upbringing, was released from jail on Monday after serving nearly two years for violating probation in the case, officials said. Ethan Couch garnered international attention in 2013 as the "affluenza teen" when his lawyers argued his privileged childhood impaired his ability to tell right from wrong. Now 20, he walked free from a jail in Fort Worth, where he served time after fleeing to Mexico and then being found in violation of the probation he received for the fatal crash. |
China Has a Super Slick Plan to Crush the U.S. Air Force in a War Posted: 02 Apr 2018 04:25 AM PDT The Chinese military is apparently working on a solution to the identification problem, and has proposed building a targeting network around the high-flying Divine Eagle sensor drone. A Divine Eagle could pass targeting data to a VLRAAM-armed fighter — and potentially even to the missile itself, provided any operational version of the munition incorporates a datalink. In concept, China's potential sensor-shooter network is similar to the U.S. Navy's own Naval Integrated Fire Control-Counter Air network, which ties together various sensors platforms with fighters and ships firing AMRAAMs and sea-launched air-defense missiles. |

Iran, Russia, Turkey team up to hold sway in Syria Posted: 02 Apr 2018 08:29 AM PDT Iran, Russia and Turkey have teamed up to forge a strong if brittle tripartite alliance aimed at holding ascendancy in Syria, taking advantage of the West's reluctance to engage militarily in the country. The presidents of the three countries, long seen as regional rivals rather than strategic allies, will meet Wednesday in Ankara for their second three way summit on Syria in a striking demonstration of unity. This meeting, which follows the first tripartite summit between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Vladimir Putin of Russia and Iran's Hassan Rouhani in Sochi last November, comes with Turkey seeking a louder voice after launching an offensive against Kurdish militia inside Syria. |

Researchers said on Monday they used NASA's Hubble Space Telescope to spot the star, which is up to a million times more luminous and about twice as hot as our sun, residing 9.3 billion lights years away from Earth. It is a type of star called a blue supergiant. |

Abiy is the first ethnic Oromo to be selected by the ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) as prime minister in its 27 years of rule.
