PHOTOS: Migrants try to breach border at Tijuana — U.S. agents fire tear gas Posted: 26 Nov 2018 06:11 AM PST Mexico pledged to shore up security near its border with the U.S. and local authorities said that 39 migrants were arrested after a peaceful march devolved into chaos when U.S. agents fired tear gas into Mexico to stop some migrants who tried to breach the border. Mexico's Interior Ministry said Sunday it would immediately deport those who tried to "violently" enter the U.S. from Tijuana. |

Alibaba's Jack Ma is a Communist Party member, China state paper reveals Posted: 26 Nov 2018 07:58 PM PST Jack Ma, the head of e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd and China's best-known capitalist, is a Communist Party member, the official Party newspaper said on Monday, debunking a public assumption the billionaire was politically unattached. The People's Daily revealed Ma's Party membership in a list of 100 people it said had helped drive the country "reform and opening up" process. Ma is China's richest man with a fortune of $35.8 billion, according to Forbes. |
Rights group urges Argentina to charge Saudi crown prince at G20 Posted: 27 Nov 2018 08:11 AM PST Human Rights Watch has urged Argentine prosecutors to consider bringing criminal charges against Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is due to join world leaders in Buenos Aires this week for the G20 summit. The New York-based rights group said it had filed a submission with Argentine prosecutors calling on them to invoke the country's universal jurisdiction statute to prosecute the crown prince for alleged war crimes committed by the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen. "Argentine prosecutorial authorities should scrutinize Mohammed bin Salman's role in possible war crimes committed by the Saudi-led coalition since 2015 in Yemen," HRW director Kenneth Roth said. |

What Facebook Really Doesn’t Want You to Talk About Posted: 27 Nov 2018 09:14 AM PST In Tuesday's hearing at the ludicrously named International Grand Committee on Disinformation and 'fake news' in London, it became clearer than ever what the social network giant is trying to keep out of the public discussion: antitrust. Instead, Richard Allan, Facebook's European lobbying chief, took questions, and the committee ensured there was an empty seat behind a placard with Zuckerberg's name on it — a barely disguised effort to generate a photo opportunity for the morning newspapers. Allan seemed willing to give ground on regulation, but with caveats. |

NASA spacecraft nears Red Planet on mission to detect 'marsquakes' Posted: 25 Nov 2018 07:28 PM PST NASA's first robotic lander designed to study the deep interior of a distant world hurtled closer to Mars on course for a planned touchdown on Monday after a six-month voyage through space. Traveling 301 million miles (548 million km) from Earth, the Mars InSight spacecraft was due to reach its destination on the dusty, rock-strewn surface of the Red Planet at about 3 p.m. EST (2000 GMT). The mission control team at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) near Los Angeles prepared to conduct a final adjustment to the InSight's flight path on Sunday to maneuver the spacecraft closer toward its entry point over Mars. |

Russian seizure of Ukrainian naval ships off Crimea sparks alarm Posted: 25 Nov 2018 10:06 PM PST Russia has seized three Ukrainian naval ships in waters near Moscow-annexed Crimea, raising fears of military escalation and prompting an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on Monday. In an unprecedented incident, Russia used weapons against the Ukranian ships which it claims illegally entered its waters before boarding and searching them, the country's FSB security service confirmed. The crisis unfolded on Sunday as two Ukrainian small warships and a tugboat were heading through the Kerch Strait, a narrow waterway that gives access to the Sea of Azov that is used by Ukraine and Russia. |

Pelosi seen closing in on House speakership Posted: 27 Nov 2018 07:58 AM PST The 78-year-old San Francisco liberal, a frequent target of Republican critics, faces a small faction of Democrats who are refusing to back her for the post in which she made history from 2007 to 2011 as the first woman speaker. Maneuvering to win over her opponents, Pelosi was set to meet on Tuesday with Democratic members of a bipartisan group known as the Problem Solvers Caucus. With a record of achievement that includes passage of 2010's Affordable Care Act, popularly known as Obamacare, Pelosi argues she is still best qualified to be speaker, rejecting critics' demands for new, younger leadership. |

Chemical arms watchdog to 'review security' for Syria gas probe Posted: 26 Nov 2018 03:34 AM PST The world's chemical watchdog said Monday it was reviewing security ahead of a possible probe into an alleged chemical attack in Syria's regime-held city of Aleppo over the weekend. Damascus formally requested the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Hague investigate the alleged attack on Saturday which Syrian officials and rights groups said left scores of people struggling to breathe. Both the Syrian regime and its ally Russia have blamed "terrorist groups" -- a term which Damascus uses to mean both rebels and jihadists. |

Ukraine introduces martial law citing threat of Russian invasion Posted: 26 Nov 2018 02:41 PM PST Poroshenko said martial law was necessary to bolster Ukraine's defenses after Russia seized three Ukrainian naval ships and took their crew prisoner at the weekend. U.S. President Donald Trump said he did not like what was happening between Russia and Ukraine and was working with European leaders on the situation. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called Russia's seizure of the Ukrainian vessels "a dangerous escalation and a violation of international law" and called for restraint from both countries. |

All The Winners and Losers of Black Friday This Year Posted: 27 Nov 2018 07:53 AM PST With spending increasingly moving online, a new set of winners is emerging as the Black Friday holiday shopping weekend comes to a close. "We are seeing a fundamental shift in who's considered winners and losers coming out of Black Friday this year," Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Jennifer Bartashus said. Prognosticators went into Thanksgiving expecting this holiday shopping season to be one of the best since the recession, possibly rivaling the boom days of the mid 2000s. |

HRW asks Argentina to probe Saudi Crown Prince over Yemen, Khashoggi Posted: 26 Nov 2018 06:29 PM PST Argentina's constitution recognizes universal jurisdiction for war crimes and torture, meaning judicial authorities can investigate and prosecute those crimes no matter where they were committed. Human Rights Watch said its submission was sent to federal judge Ariel Lijo. HRW's Middle East and North Africa director Sarah Leah Whitson said the international rights group took the case to Argentina because Prince Mohammed, also known as MbS, will attend the opening of the G20 summit this week in Buenos Aires. |
