Yahoo News Explains: Why we’re closer to climate catastrophe than we thought Posted: 09 Oct 2018 03:42 PM PDT The planet is even closer to catastrophe than scientists previously predicted, according to a new report from the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The report, that took 3 years to create and included 91 authors from 40 countries, says the planet will reach the crucial threshold of 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels as early as 2040. Scientists predict that any higher than 1.5°C and the effects will be irreversible. "There is extreme urgency and countries were giving their pledges after the Paris agreement and so far, the progress has not been good enough," said World Meteorological Organizations secretary, Petteri Taalas. |

Self-driving cars may hit U.S. roads in pilot program - NHTSA Posted: 09 Oct 2018 09:15 PM PDT Fully self-driving cars may be on the fast lane to U.S. roads under a pilot program the Trump administration said on Tuesday it was considering, which would allow real-world road testing for a limited number of the vehicles. Self-driving cars used in the program would potentially need to have technology disabling the vehicle if a sensor fails or barring vehicles from traveling above safe speeds, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said in a document made public Tuesday. NHTSA said it was considering whether it would have to be notified of any accident within 24 hours and was seeking public input on what other data should be disclosed including near misses. |
Saudi journalist's disappearance threatens Turkey-Saudi ties Posted: 09 Oct 2018 12:53 PM PDT The disappearance of journalist and Riyadh critic Jamal Khashoggi from Saudi Arabia's Istanbul consulate has rattled already brittle ties between two powerful rivals vying for influence in the Muslim world, analysts say. The Washington Post contributor, who has penned articles critical of some of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's policies in the Arab and Western press, vanished a week ago. Turkish government sources at the weekend said police believed he was killed inside, claims dismissed by Riyadh as "baseless". |

How many women will Kavanaugh hurt as a supreme court justice? Posted: 10 Oct 2018 03:00 AM PDT The arch-conservative and man accused of multiple sexual assaults, Brett Kavanaugh, was confirmed to the US supreme court. There is no delicate way to put this: because of Kavanaugh's appointment to the US supreme court, the future will be more painful and less free for American women than the recent past has been. |

FBI chief says threats from drones to U.S. 'steadily escalating' Posted: 10 Oct 2018 08:46 AM PDT FBI director Christopher Wray told a U.S. Senate panel on Wednesday that the threat from drones "is steadily escalating" even as Congress gives agencies new tools to address threats. Wray made his comments days after President Donald Trump signed into law legislation that gives the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the FBI new powers to disable or destroy drones that pose a threat to government facilities. |
Most heavy arms pulled out of planned Syria buffer zone Posted: 09 Oct 2018 07:27 AM PDT Jihadists and Turkish-backed rebels in Syria's last major opposition stronghold have withdrawn heavy weapons from nearly all of a planned buffer zone, a monitor said Tuesday, a day ahead of deadline. The pullback is the first major test of a deal brokered by government ally Russia and Turkey last month to avoid what the United Nations warned would be the appalling humanitarian consequences of a major government offensive. Analysts had expected Ankara to have a difficult time enforcing the September 17 deal but by Tuesday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the heavy weapons pullout was nearly complete. |

Dubbed the i4, it will be the BMW Group's fifth fully electric "core" model. BMW has given no details on the production i4 aside from the release date, but that concept had an electric range of 373 miles (albeit on the very optimistic European test cycle), a top speed of 125 mph, and a zero-to-62-mph time of 4.0 seconds. |

Morgan Stanley Gives Up on Flattening Yield Curve Too Soon Posted: 10 Oct 2018 02:00 AM PDT In July 2016, when the 10-year Treasury yield reached an unprecedented low of 1.32 percent, he pushed the envelope, declaring "the year of the bull for rates markets" would push the global benchmark to 1 percent. In what the bank's chief cross-asset strategist deemed Morgan Stanley's "most controversial call, by a country mile," Hornbach projected in late 2017 that 30-year yields would fall to a record low 2 percent by the end of this year. |

Pope compares having an abortion to 'hiring a hit man' Posted: 10 Oct 2018 04:35 AM PDT Abortion is a raging political battle in a number of countries, including the United States, where many conservatives hope the Supreme Court will eventually overturn the landmark 1973 ruling known as Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion. Francis made his off-the-cuff comments on abortion, some of his toughest to date, in an address to tens of thousands of people gathered in St. Peter's Square for his weekly general audience. "I ask you: 'Is it right to 'take out' a human life to solve a problem? |
'Just say no' to drug legalisation: WHO chief Posted: 10 Oct 2018 03:55 AM PDT With Canada on the verge of becoming the world's second nation to legalise recreational marijuana, the head of the World Health Organization said Wednesday that countries should think twice before opening that door. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who was in the Philippines for a regional meeting, told AFP the organisation supports availability of drugs like marijuana for medical reasons. "I think any addictive substance is not good for human health," he said. |

Trump appointees hold keys in Supreme Court immigration case Posted: 10 Oct 2018 11:47 AM PDT The nine justices on Wednesday heard the administration argue for sweeping government authority to detain immigrants awaiting deportation after they complete sentences for criminal convictions, even years after leaving prison. The administration, which has taken a hard line toward immigration, has appealed a lower court ruling in favor of immigrants that the government has said undermines its ability to deport immigrants who have committed crimes. In April, Gorsuch joined with the court's four liberal justices in a 5-4 ruling in another immigration case that could hinder the administration's ability to step up the removal of immigrants with criminal records. |
FBI Director Wray says Kavanaugh background investigation was ‘limited in scope’ Posted: 10 Oct 2018 11:59 AM PDT When asked by Sen. Kamala Harris, FBI Director Christopher Wray tells a Senate committee that the background investigation into sexual assault claims against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh was "limited in scope" as directed by the White House, but that limit was "consistent with the standard process for such investigations." |
Man held in Bulgarian journalist murder probe to be released Posted: 09 Oct 2018 10:34 AM PDT A Romanian man who had been detained as part of the investigation into the killing of a Bulgarian journalist in the northern town of Ruse will be freed, police said on Tuesday. The brutal murder of 30-year-old Viktoria Marinova -- who presented a current affairs talk programme called "Detector" for the small TVN television channel -- has shocked the country and drawn international condemnation. Ruse police chief commissioner Teodor Atanasov said Tuesday that a man had been detained, adding that "we're still checking his alibi so he is not officially a suspect for committing the crime yet". |
