The Trump administration is not answering basic questions about separation of migrant families

Posted: 03 Jul 2018 02:19 PM PDT

The Trump administration is not answering basic questions about separation of migrant familiesAlmost two weeks have passed since President Trump signed an executive order to "address" immigrant children being taken from their parents at the U.S. border, but the impact of his action remains unclear. Much of the uncertainty stems from the fact that officials on Tuesday still would not answer basic questions about the issue, including how many separated children are currently in custody. Officials also aren't saying whether the government has stopped taking immigrant children from their parents after illegal border crossings.

Supreme Court battles show the danger of gaming the rulesSen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and I stood alone in a Senate office hallway a year ago, moments after Senate Republicans nuked the filibuster rule for Supreme Court nominees in order to confirm Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. "The Senate has been damaged to a degree that it hasn't been in its history," McCain told me then. Now, with the retirement of Justice Anthony Kennedy from the court, a Republican president and GOP-controlled Senate have a clear path to confirming his replacement without any Democratic votes.

Son of Isil leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi 'killed fighting in Syria'

Posted: 04 Jul 2018 03:17 AM PDT

Son of Isil leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi 'killed fighting in Syria'The son of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the fugitive "caliph" of the Islamic State (Isil), has been killed trying to attack a thermal power station in Syria, the jihadist group said.  Hudhayfah al-Badri was killed in Homs province fighting against Russian forces and Assad regime troops, Isil said in a statement released through its official channels.  Badri is believed to have been around 18 years old. In a photograph released by Isil he appeared as a young teenager. He was holding an assault rifle in the photograph, although the image have been digitally altered.  The Isil statement did not say when he was killed. It identified him as "the son of the caliph". Hisham al-Hashimi, an Iraqi historian, told The Telegraph that Badri was the son of Baghdadi's first wife, an Iraqi woman named Asmaa Fawzi Mohammed al-Kubaisi.  Badri was born in 2000 in the Iraqi city of Samarra, before his father became a senior leader with al-Qaeda in Iraq, the terrorist group which eventually became Isil. Baghdadi is believed to have at least four other children.  Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has not been seen since 2014 The Isil statement said Badri was killed during an "inghimasi operation", usually an attack where jihadists fight for as long as they can with guns and grenades. The attacks typically end either with the assailants being gunned down or else killing themselves with suicide vests.  Inghimasi operations are different from more traditionally suicide bombing missions, where the attacker usually detonates their explosives as soon as they reach their targets.  Baghdadi remains the world's most wanted man and the US is offering a $25 million reward for information leading to his death or capture.  While his caliphate has crumbled in both Iraq and Syria, Baghdadi himself has eluded capture. He is believed to be hiding in a remote area near the Iraqi-Syrian border. There have been persistent rumours that he was badly injured in an airstrike.   Baghdadi swept to global prominence in July 2014, when he appeared at the Great Mosque in Mosul to declare himself as the leader of the new Islamic State.  Isil has since been driven from Mosul by Iraqi forces supported by Shia militias and Western airpower. The mosque where Baghdadi spoke was blown up by Isil fighters in a last act of defiance.  He has not been heard from since September, when he released a 46-minute audio recording urging Isil followers across the world to wage attacks against the West and to keep fighting in Iraq, Syria and elsewhere. Baghdadi is believed to have had at least two other Arab wives and may also have married a young German woman who travelled to Iraq to join Isil.
