Merkel to give up party leadership after poll setback Posted: 29 Oct 2018 03:46 AM PDT Germany's Angela Merkel will not run for re-election as leader of her centre-right CDU, sources said Monday, in the clearest sign yet that the veteran chancellor is preparing her eventual exit after voters again punished her fragile coalition in a regional poll. Merkel, who has headed the CDU for 18 years, had until now always indicated that she believed the posts of party leader and chancellor should be held by the same person. "She will not stand again for the chairmanship of her party," a source within the Christian Democratic Union told AFP. |
Chinese privately developed rocket fails to reach orbit Posted: 28 Oct 2018 03:50 AM PDT A privately developed Chinese carrier rocket failed to reach orbit after lifting off from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center on Saturday, in a blow to the country's nascent attempts by private companies to rival Elon Musk's SpaceX. "Before Zhuque carrier rocket was launched, its mission was already completed," the company said in the post on Saturday, without giving further details. Landspace was founded in 2015 and soon aimed to be the first Chinese private company to deliver a satellite into orbit. |

Traffic saved Indonesian man from doomed Lion Air flight Posted: 29 Oct 2018 04:40 AM PDT An Indonesian man has described how Jakarta's notorious traffic inadvertently saved his life on Monday after he arrived too late to catch the doomed Lion Air plane which plunged into the sea minutes after taking off. Sony Setiawan, an official in Indonesia's finance ministry, had meant to be on board the ill-fated flight JT610, a journey he and his colleagues caught on a weekly basis. "I usually take (flight) JT610 -- my friends and I always take this plane," Setiawan told AFP. |
Bolsonaro Gets Brazilian Oil Windfall With Output Poised to Soar Posted: 29 Oct 2018 10:09 AM PDT After a decade of stagnant production, Brazil's offshore mega-projects are about to deliver a double whammy with exports set to surge and Brent prices comfortably above $70 a barrel. This means more revenue for a country beset with fiscal deficits, and more activity in a key industry, said Decio Oddone, the head of Brazil's National Petroleum Agency. The oil turnaround gives the government more than just cash -- it promises to revive the fortunes of Petrobras, the much-maligned state-controlled state oil company that's a source of pride for many Brazilians but which has spent the past few years mired in scandal. |

On Monday he met Istanbul's chief prosecutor. |

[L2N1X7059] "All of us, in reality, are wounded by this inhuman act of violence," said Francis, who has often condemned anti-Semitism and who wrote a book with a rabbi in their native Buenos Aires when he was the city's archbishop before his election as pope. Francis expressed his closeness to all the people of Pittsburgh "and in particular the Jewish community, stricken by a terrible attack on the synagogue". |
Posted: 29 Oct 2018 03:00 AM PDT Brazil's president-elect Jair Bolsonaro has promised to uphold the constitution following his election victory, in response to fears the far-right leader threatens the nation's democratic institutions. International human rights groups and defeated left-wing rival Fernando Haddad have warned of a looming crackdown on civil liberties as the country moves sharply to the right. Mr Bolsonaro, who won just over 55 per cent of the votes on Sunday, tried to allay fears about his win, saying he would "pacify" Brazil following an election campaign repeatedly marred by violence. |
