Posted: 03 Aug 2017 06:59 AM PDT A picture and audio recording of a plane that almost crash landed into a busy taxiway has shed more light on what one aviation expert said could have been the "greatest aviation disaster in history". Air Canada Flight 759 was moments way from tragedy as it approached San Francisco International Airport, mistaking the taxiway for the runway, before pilots pulled the plane up again at just 18 metres above the ground to try another landing. United Airlines pilots queuing at the front of the taxiway alerted air traffic controllers, and Philippine Airlines pilots in the plane behind switched on their landing lights to signal danger. |
In violence-plagued Baltimore, weekend ceasefire offers glimmer of hope Posted: 03 Aug 2017 11:08 AM PDT By Ian Simpson BALTIMORE (Reuters) - After the deaths of nearly 20 of her friends and relatives, Erricka Bridgeford said she wanted to take a stand against Baltimore's worst wave of deadly violence in a generation. "We want to purposefully just have a pause and a sacred space where everybody's intention is that nobody gets killed," Bridgeford said. The ceasefire has the support of gang leaders, drug dealers and others linked to the violence, she said. |

Partition key battleground in India, Pakistan textbook wars Posted: 04 Aug 2017 03:05 AM PDT Pakistani high school student Noman Afzal knows "traitorous" Hindus are to blame for the bloodshed that erupted when British India split into two nations 70 years ago. Students across the border in India are taught a starkly different version of events, the result of a decades-long effort by the nuclear-armed rivals to shape and control history to their own nationalistic narrative. August marks 70 years since the subcontinent was divided into two independent states -- Hindu-majority India and Muslim-majority Pakistan -- and millions were uprooted in one of the largest mass migrations in history. |

Venezuela: Vatican calls on Nicolas Maduro's government to suspend constitutional assembly Posted: 04 Aug 2017 05:07 AM PDT The Vatican has urged Venezuela's president not to proceed with a controversial new assembly that his critics say would give him unprecedented power. In a statement issued on the day Mr Maduro was set to install the new assembly - a vote for which last week was boycotted by the opposition parties and denounced as "rigged - the Vatican called on "all political actors, and in particular the government, to ensure full respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms and the existing constitution". "The Holy See appeals firmly to all of society to avoid all forms of violence and invites, in particular, the security forces to refrain from excessive and disproportionate use of force," it said. |
U.S. pushes U.N. to slash North Korea exports by a third over missile tests Posted: 04 Aug 2017 02:06 PM PDT By Michelle Nichols UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - A U.S.-drafted United Nations Security Council resolution, seen by Reuters on Friday, aims to slash by a third North Korea's $3 billion annual export revenue by banning the country's trade of coal, iron, iron ore, lead, lead ore and seafood. A council diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, said there was a "high confidence" that North Korea ally China and Russia would support the draft resolution, which was circulated to the 15 Security Council members on Friday. The United States is aiming for a vote on Saturday to impose the stronger sanctions over North Korea's two intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) tests in July, though Russia and some other council members are asking for more time, diplomats said. |
Pilot could face homicide charges over Portugal crash landing Posted: 03 Aug 2017 12:50 PM PDT A flight instructor and trainee pilot whose small plane killed two people during an emergency landing on a crowded Portuguese beach could face negligent homicide charges, prosecutors said Thursday. The two men refused to speak to reporters as they left court in Almada, across the River Tagus from Lisbon, where they were questioned behind closed doors. "The plane first hit the man, who had his back to it," Filipe Janeira, 34, who was at the beach, told daily Jornal de Noticias. |

When is the Perseid Meteor shower and how can I see it? Posted: 04 Aug 2017 05:55 AM PDT The Perseids is an annual meteor shower that peaks around mid-August,with this year's peak expected between 11 and 13 August. It's regarded as one of the brightest and most visible meteor showers. Here's everything you need to know about the spectacle, including dates and where to see it. #perseids are coming!! pic.twitter.com/F19pqGL3nO— GaryFildes (@TheGaryFildes) July 9, 2017 What is a meteor shower? Ameteor shower occurs when Earth passes through the debris stream occupying the orbit of a comet, in this case comet Swift-Tuttle. Perspective makes meteor showers appear to emanate from a single point in the sky known as the shower radiant. A typical meteor results from a particle the size of a grain of sand vaporising in Earth's atmosphere when it enters at 134,000mph. Something larger than a grape will produce a fireball and this is often accompanied by a persistent afterglow known as a meteor train. This is a column of ionised gas slowly fading from view as it loses energy. The Perseids appear to originate from within the star constellation Perseus, hence the shower's name. The window for this year's meteor shower is from July 17 to August 24. Stargazers stand a chance of seeing the shower at any point in this window, however the peak will occur around August 11, 12 and 13. The best time to take a look at the sky will be from about 1am BST in the Northern Hemisphere until the onset of dawn twilight. Space.com says the moon, which will be three-quarters full at the time of the peak, will rise around 11pm meaning the spectacle will be trickier to see this year. However, sky-watchers should still be able to see the shower, despite the moon's glare. Peak rates of 150-200 meteors per hour were recorded in 2016, but typical rates are about 80 meteors an hour streaking across the night sky, each leaving a trail. Complete list of every full moon in 2017 The worlds best stargazing locations How can I see it? Choose a dark location away from stray lights and give yourself at least 20 minutes in total darkness to properly dark adapt. Look at a height approximately two-thirds up the sky in any direction. If you want a recommendation, east through south offers some great background constellations in the early hours during August. Look for the shower's "radiant" from the north-east corner of Perseus. Here are a few great places to view the shower. Galloway Forest Park: Galloway is a couple of hours from Glasgow and an hour from Carlisle. The park's most popular spot for stargazing is Loch Trool. Exmoor and around: Exmoor was granted International Dark-Sky Reserve status by the International Dark-Sky Association in 2011. Light pollution is managed to make the area more appealing to amateur astronomers. Romney Marsh: Night once provided cover for smugglers known as Owlers, but today Romney Marsh offers celestial bounty, arching over a landscape adorned with the spires of ancient churches. Kielder: Kielder Forest is officially the darkest place in England – 250 square miles of wooded beauty where Northumberland brushes against Scotland. It has its own fabulous, modern, wood-clad observatory on the slopes of Black Fell above Kielder Water. North York Moors: As well as stunning night skies, the North York Moors boast historic market towns such as Helmsley and Pickering, plus appealing coastal spots, including Scarborough and Whitby. It orbits the sun ever 133 years and each time it passes through the inner solar system, it warms up releasing fresh comet material into its orbital stream, according to earthsky.org. The last time it was closest to the sun was in December 1992. It will be back again in July 2126. Total solar eclipse 2017: explainer |

Immigrants denied credit by Wells Fargo may sue bank, judge says Posted: 04 Aug 2017 08:39 AM PDT Young immigrants denied credit by Wells Fargo Bank because they are not permanent U.S. residents can sue the bank under a post-Civil War law barring discrimination on the basis of immigration status, a federal judge ruled. In a decision on Thursday, U.S. District Judge Maxine Chesney in San Francisco rejected Wells Fargo's argument that lenders are permitted under a more recent federal anti-discrimination law to consider immigration status before granting loans. Filed in January, the proposed class action accused Wells Fargo of denying student loans and credit cards to immigrants granted work permits under the 2012 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program enacted by former Democratic President Barack Obama. |

Venezuela showdown looms over contested new assembly Posted: 03 Aug 2017 06:25 PM PDT Venezuela is headed for a fresh showdown as President Nicolas Maduro prepares to inaugurate a powerful new "Constituent Assembly" on Friday, with his opponents vowing massive protests and state prosecutors seeking to block him in court. Attorney General Luisa Ortega's office said on Twitter that state prosecutors had filed a case to block Friday's inauguration, "based on suspected crimes committed" during the election. Ortega, one of Maduro's most vocal critics, has ordered an investigation into "scandalous" electoral fraud, after a British-based technology firm contracted for the vote, Smartmatic, said Maduro had exaggerated the turnout. |

In blustery call, Trump pressured Mexico on border wall payment Posted: 03 Aug 2017 03:54 PM PDT By Ayesha Rascoe WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump pressured the Mexican president to stop voicing opposition in public to his plan to have Mexico pay for a border wall, according to transcripts of phone calls published on Thursday that gave an insight into Trump's attempts to influence foreign leaders in his first days in office. The Washington Post published texts of sometimes fraught calls with Mexico's Enrique Pena Nieto and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull just days after the Republican took office on Jan. 20. The substance of the calls has previously been reported but the lengthy transcripts reveal Trump, whose first elected office is the presidency, trying to use a mixture of bluster, tough talk and charm as he fully enters the world of diplomacy. |

Refugees from Lebanon camps arrive at edge of Syrian rebel zone Posted: 03 Aug 2017 06:54 AM PDT Buses carrying Syrians who left Lebanon after a ceasefire between Hezbollah and Nusra militants on Thursday started crossing into the rebel-held zone where they will settle, a Hezbollah military media unit reported. About 7,000 Syrians, including Nusra militants and refugees, left the Arsal district on the border between Lebanon and Syria as part of a ceasefire deal that also involves the handover of captured Hezbollah fighters. A convoy of more than 100 buses arrived on Thursday at Saan in Hama province, where they began to cross frontlines from government territory, the Hezbollah media unit said. |
Senators head home, and block Trump recess appointments Posted: 03 Aug 2017 07:24 PM PDT The US Senate adjourned Thursday leaving Donald Trump deprived of any major legislative victory heading into summer break, as lawmakers also blocked the president from making so-called recess appointments during the rest period. The move, by unanimous consent of the 100 senators, serves as a check on Trump as he mulls firing his Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Trump has considered replacing his embattled top law enforcement official amid broadening investigations into allegations that his aides coordinated with Russia to tilt last year's election in his favor. |

Samsung has shipped over 20 million Galaxy S8 smartphones Posted: 03 Aug 2017 05:00 PM PDT If there was any concern that the Galaxy S8 would struggle to find a foothold in 2017 with the release of the 10th anniversary iPhone looming, those concerns have been allayed in the days, weeks and months following the launch of Samsung's latest flagship. On Thursday, citing market research firm Strategy Analytics, The Investor reported that Samsung has shipped over 20 million Galaxy S8 units.
Data compiled by the firm shows that Samsung has shipped 278,000 Galaxy S8 phones a day since the phone's release on April 21st. That amounts to 19.8 million shipments through June, which would have made 20 million shipments a fairly reasonable expectation for the end of July. As The Investor notes, Samsung's mobile division chief Koh Dong-Jin said at a media event last month that the Galaxy S8 had outsold the Galaxy S7 by 15% in the same three-month period after launch. Then in a conference call, the company stated that S8 sales in some regions have already doubled S7 sales at the same time last year, despite the S8 launching a month later than the S7. While Apple is sure to turn heads and break records with the iPhone 8/iPhone X/iPhone Pro later this fall, Samsung has done more than tread water in the interim. At this point, it's clear that any misgivings consumers had over the Note 7 debacle have dissipated. And on top of the Galaxy S8's success, Samsung will try to keep the ball rolling when it introduces the Galaxy Note 8 at an event in NYC on August 23rd. Based on what we've seen, it could be another smash hit. |

Ethiopia lifts emergency rule imposed last October after months of unrest Posted: 04 Aug 2017 03:39 AM PDT By Aaron Maasho ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Ethiopia on Friday lifted a state of emergency imposed last October following months of protests that killed hundreds of people. More than 29,000 people were arrested during the period and nearly 8,000 of them are on trial for taking part in the violence, Defence Minister Siraj Fegessa said. The unrest was provoked by a development scheme for the capital Addis Ababa and turned into broader anti-government demonstrations over politics and human rights abuses. |
