Posted: 06 Oct 2017 01:26 PM PDT SAN FRANCISCO ― The Trump administration will go after undocumented immigrants in their neighborhoods and at work in California, likely picking up "collateral" they were not initially targeting, after the state's new "sanctuary" law goes into effect, Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Tom Homan said Friday. |

Hamas arrests suspected jihadist leader in Gaza Posted: 07 Oct 2017 04:09 AM PDT Hamas police detained a suspected jihadist leader in Gaza on Saturday, a security source said, the latest in a series of arrests of those accused of Islamic State group ideology. "This morning, security forces arrested Nour Issa, 27, who is a leader of the deviant thought movement and is from Bureij Camp in central Gaza, along with others," the source said, using a phrase Hamas officials routinely use to refer to jihadists, including IS. The Islamist Hamas movement has run Gaza for a decade but it has been challenged by small hardline factions, some of them inspired by IS, who advocate a stricter, Salafist interpretation of the faith. |

Danish police find decapitated head of Swedish journalist Posted: 07 Oct 2017 07:54 AM PDT Danish police said Saturday that divers had recovered the decapitated head and the legs of Swedish journalist Kim Wall, who vanished in August while interviewing a Danish inventor aboard his homemade submarine. In a grisly case worthy of a Nordic noir thriller, Copenhagen police inspector Jens Moller Jensen told reporters that divers had found bags containing her missing clothes, her head and legs in Koge Bay, south of the Danish capital. "Last night our forensic dentist confirmed that it was Kim Wall's head," he said. |

Bill Maher Issues Strong Words To Democrats About Over-Regulation Posted: 07 Oct 2017 12:21 AM PDT Bill Maher has urged Democrats to "go big or go home" when it comes to regulation. Over-regulation fed into the Republican narrative that Democrats "don't want to help people" but just "want to micro-manage their lives," he said. Maher agreed that more regulation "for big things" such as "guns and carbon emission and banks" was needed. |

Anton Morozov told Russian state-backed news agency RIA Novost that he and two colleagues had visited North Korea, where they were shown the North Korean calculations that the missile could hit America. The North Koreans showed him the "mathematical calculations which they say prove that their missile is capable of reaching the US west coast," he said. |

The United States had previously announced that three U.S. Army Special Forces soldiers had been killed and another two wounded when a joint U.S.-Nigerien patrol came under attack near the village of Tongo Tongo. Officials said his body was found by Nigerien forces on Friday morning near the site of the ambush, ending an extensive rescue and recovery mission. |

In a speech to a foreign policy think tank in Washington DC, the man who may still be considering a presidential run in 2020, said it was time for experts to raise their voices and speak out. California becomes first 'sanctuary state' for undocumented migrants Posted: 06 Oct 2017 04:00 PM PDT California became the first "sanctuary state" for undocumented immigrants Friday, a decision criticized by the Trump administration which believes the move will compromise security. California's governor, Democrat Jerry Brown, signed the landmark legislation -- Senate Bill 54 (SB54) -- which grants better protections to people who are in the US without permission, including those who have committed crimes. It also limits cooperation between local police forces and federal authorities in operations to track down undocumented immigrants. |

A Mexican photographer who was abducted at gunpoint from his home has been found dead, the seventh journalist to be killed this year in one of the world's most dangerous countries for media workers. |
Russian protesters rally on Vladimir Putin's birthday Posted: 07 Oct 2017 08:10 AM PDT Police detained more than 100 supporters of jailed opposition leader Alexei Navalny on Saturday as thousands rallied nationwide on President Vladimir Putin's 65th birthday, calling for the leader to retire. Mr Putin, who has now reached the official retirement age of lower-ranking state employees, is widely expected to run again in next year's presidential election and enjoys a high approval rating. Mr Navalny has declared his intention to run in the election next March and was campaigning in provincial cities as part of his long-shot bid for the presidency. He was arrested late last month and a court last week sentenced him to 20 days in jail on charges of repeatedly violating a law on organising public meetings. "I came out to support the opposition because I don't agree with the course our country has taken," said Anatoly Morozov, a student dressed in a fox costume at the St Petersburg protest. "The ignorance and insanity has reached impossible levels." Protesters chanted "Free Navalny," "Putin's a theif" and "Fourth term in prison," referring to the president's expected run for re-election. Last year Mr Putin played hockey on his birthday, but the mood this year was not as light. The Kremlin said on Friday he would be taking phone calls and attending a meeting of the security council in Sochi. Mr Putin's spokesman warned that violators could be prosecuted, but activists declared they would go ahead anyway. "Many supporters want to see Navalny as president, they come out on the streets because for now that's the only format in which they can express this," said Polina Kostyleva, the head of Mr Navalny's St Petersburg campaign office. She was detained and fined this week after police raided the office and found fliers about the protest. In the Urals city of Yekaterinburg, where an estimated 700 people came to the demonstration including maverick mayor Yevgeny Roizman, police detained at least 18 people, according to independent monitoring group OVD-Info. In Moscow, protesters chanted "down with the tsar" and marched toward the Kremlin before running into a wall of riot police. Police said 700 people had participated while activists put the number as high as 2,000. |
