After landslide re-election, Russia's Putin tells West: I don't want arms race Posted: 19 Mar 2018 11:01 AM PDT By Andrew Osborn and Christian Lowe MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin struck a softer tone towards the West on Monday after winning his biggest ever election victory, saying he had no desire for an arms race and would do everything he could to resolve differences with other countries. Putin's victory, which comes at a time when his relations with the West are on a hostile trajectory, will extend his political dominance of Russia by six years to 2024. "We will do everything to resolve all the differences with our partners using political and diplomatic channels." His comments, which are likely to be heard with some scepticism in the West following years of confrontation, mark a change in tone after a bellicose election campaign during which Putin unveiled new nuclear weapons he said could strike almost any point in the world.. German Chancellor Angela Merkel wished Putin success and called for more dialogue.

Cameron said the security officer fired a shot at Rollins, but it was not immediately clear if the officer struck the gunman or whether he had committed suicide.

300,000 Troops Will Soon Train for War With North Korea (But There's A Big Catch) Posted: 20 Mar 2018 06:46 AM PDT Washington and Seoul have announced that their annual joint military drills will commence from April 1, while a massive diplomat effort is underway to lay the foundations for two summits designed to resolve issues on the troubled peninsula. The military drills, involving over 300,000 troops, were delayed because of the 2018 Winter Olympiad, which finished when the Paralympics concluded on March 18. An intensive inter-Korean dialog on the sidelines of the Games resulted in plans for an inter-Korean summit and – according to a South Korean delegation which went to Pyongyang – a promise from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to suspend nuclear and missile tests and to convene a summit with US President Donald Trump.

Xi warns Taiwan will face 'punishment of history' for separatism Posted: 20 Mar 2018 12:03 PM PDT By Philip Wen and Ben Blanchard BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese President Xi Jinping told self-ruled Taiwan on Tuesday that it would face the "punishment of history" for any attempt at separatism, offering his strongest warning yet to the island claimed by China as its sacred territory. The government of Taiwan, one of China's most sensitive issues and a potentially dangerous military flashpoint, responded that it hoped China could "break free" of the old clichés of threats and force. China's hostility towards Taiwan has risen since the 2016 election of President Tsai Ing-wen, a member of the island's pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party.

U.S. high court skeptical toward California law on anti-abortion centers Posted: 20 Mar 2018 11:44 AM PDT A California law that requires Christian-based facilities that steer pregnant women away from abortion to post notices about the availability of state-subsidized abortions ran into trouble at the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday, with justices on the right and left indicating it may violate free speech rights. Various justices voiced concern that the Democratic-backed 2015 law was crafted to take aim at a specific viewpoint -- opposition to abortion -- held by these non-profit facilities called crisis pregnancy centers. Conservative justices sharply questioned the lawyer representing California, and even two liberal justices expressed unease with parts of the law during an hour-long argument in an appeal by these facilities of a lower court ruling upholding the statute.

J.K. Rowling had a heartwarming response to this struggling 'Harry Potter' fan Posted: 20 Mar 2018 05:30 AM PDT When she's not busy hammering trolls into the ground on Twitter, J.K. Rowling likes to take time to interact with her fans. She's previously comforted people on Mother's Day and Christmas, and reached out directly to people who tweeted at her to ask for help and advice. And on Monday, she did it again. SEE ALSO: 27 times J.K. Rowling was the hero we all needed in 2016 It started when a Harry Potter fan tweeted to thank Rowling for her books, which she said provided an escape from her depression. Dragging myself through another bout of severe #depression and re-reading the #HarryPotter series to strengthen my Patronus. A million thanks to @jk_rowling for the magical escape that's always there when it's needed ❤ — Sally Burns (@joosylemon) March 19, 2018 Less than 20 minutes later, Rowling responded. Those stories saved their author, too. Nothing makes me happier than to think that they went out into the world to do the same for other people. Keep that Patronus powerful ✨ https://t.co/d9ByD4WtCo — J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) March 19, 2018 Shortly after, a fan asked Rowling which books she turns to when she's going through a tough time. I grew up with your stories and they've always helped me through tough times, but besides the stories of your own making, I can't help but to wonder which ones you turned to when going through a tough time yourself. — Sara (@skummelhummel) March 19, 2018 To tell you the truth, when I'm really stressed or overwhelmed I turn to biographies of people who've led turbulent lives. I find it soothing and inspiring to read about people who've endured and overcome. https://t.co/oGDFHH5dzG — J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) March 19, 2018 Books really are a wonderful thing. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas calls US ambassador 'son of a dog' Posted: 19 Mar 2018 07:19 PM PDT Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Monday called the US ambassador to Israel a "son of a dog" because of his support for Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank. Mr Abbas, speaking at a Palestinian leadership gathering, also blamed Hamas for a bomb attack last week on the convoy of Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah in Gaza, remarks that threatened reconciliation efforts with the Islamist group. The Palestinian leader accused Ambassador David Friedman of defending Israeli settlers in the West Bank by saying that they were building on "their land". The slur drew rebukes from the diplomat and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In an angry tone, Mr Abbas said: "The son of dog says they build on their land? He is a settler, and his family are settlers, and he is the US ambassador in Tel Aviv. What should we expect from him?" Mr Friedman, a strong supporter of Israel's settler movement, was an early and enthusiastic advocate of US President Donald Trump's decision in December to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital and to move the US embassy there. David Friedman addresses the American Israel Public Affairs Committee Credit: AFP Mr Friedman responded during a speech in Jerusalem to a conference on combating global anti-Semitism, saying: "His response was to refer to me as son of a dog. Anti-Semitism or political discourse? Not for me to judge, I leave that all up to you." Jason Greenblatt, US Middle East envoy, issued a statement calling Mr Abbas' comment "highly inappropriate". He said the Palestinian leader needed "to choose between hateful rhetoric and concrete and practical efforts to improve the quality of life of his people". Mr Trump's announcement on Jerusalem delighted the Israeli government but infuriated Palestinians, who have staged regular protests since then. Jerusalem - Israel Israel regards Jerusalem as its eternal and indivisible capital, although that is not recognised internationally. Palestinians feel equally strongly, saying that East Jerusalem must be the capital of a future Palestinian state. Peace talks aimed at finding a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict have stalled, while Israeli settlement expansion has continued. Mr Netanyahu said Mr Trump's decisions on Jerusalem appeared to have brought Abbas to the point of making a verbal attacks on a US official. "For the first time in decades, the US administration has stopped spoiling the Palestinian leaders and tells them: enough is enough," Netanyahu said on Twitter. "Apparently the shock of the truth has caused them to lose it."

"The belief that we are now dealing with is someone who uses trip wires shows a higher level of sophistication, a higher level of skill," Mr Manley said during a Monday morning press conference.
