Netanyahu and Putin defuse crisis after Syria downs Russia warplane Posted: 18 Sep 2018 11:47 AM PDT Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin sought to defuse a crisis on Tuesday after Syrian defences mistakenly downed a Russian warplane after Israeli air strikes. The incident late Monday was the deadliest known case of friendly fire between Syria and its key backer Russia since Moscow's game-changing 2015 military intervention. The Ilyushin plane dropped off the radar over the Mediterranean after Turkey and Russia announced a deal that offered millions of people reprieve from a threatened military assault in northern Syria's Idlib province. |

Syria's Idlib spared attack, Turkey to send in more troops Posted: 18 Sep 2018 03:42 PM PDT The deal unveiled on Monday by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Assad's most powerful ally, and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan will create a demilitarized zone from which "radical" rebels must withdraw by the middle of next month. Damascus also welcomed the agreement but vowed to continue its efforts to recover "every inch" of Syria. Iran, Assad's other main ally, said that "responsible diplomacy" had averted a war in Idlib "with a firm commitment to fight extremist terror". |
British chips to be 3cm shorter than usual as Belgian potatoes hit by dry, hot summer Posted: 18 Sep 2018 06:00 AM PDT Britons will be served up shorter chips this year as potato farmers across Europe struggle to cope with the worst summer drought for decades. Britain eats 1.75 million tonnes of frozen chips every year and is, alongside the US, the world's largest importer of the product. Almost all frozen fry imports to Britain, about 750,000 tonnes, come from the Netherlands and Belgium. The hot weather and lack of rain has hit European crop yields, resulting in a drop of about 20% in Northern Europe, and made the potatoes, usually the size of a small brick, smaller. That will mean smaller, shorter chips, potato experts in Britain and Belgium have warned. The remaining million tonnes of frozen fries eaten ever year are made from British potatoes but even British farmers are facing a 10 to 15 percent drop in yield. Britons are one of the biggest potato eaters in the EU, eating a 100kg of potatoes per person ever year. "This was the hottest British summer since 1976, which any potato person will tell you was an almost mythical year," said Cedric Porter, editor of World Potato Markets, "it is still talked about in potato circles." "The chips are down," he said, "You can expect smaller chips in Britain and in Europe." Mr Porter said that Belgian and Dutch farmers had been hit hard and could struggle to fulfil their contracts. Potatoes sold on the open market, rather than under contract, were selling for €10 a ton last year but were now selling for €250 a ton. The squeeze on frites has appalled Belgians, who cherish the chip as their national dish. The traditional Bintje, tuber and the newer Fontane varieties have been much smaller with crop yields dropping by 25 percent in Belgium. Pierre Lebrun is the coordinator of the potato sector of Wallonia, Belgium's French-speaking region. He told local media that the poor crop would mean frites from tubers being shortened by as much as 3 centimetres from their usual length of 8 to 9 cm. "We will all eat small fries", said Mr Lebrun, who added that farmers in Western Germany, France, the Netherlands and the south of Britain "were all in the same boat." "The soils are very dry, it does not make it easy for farmers to work," Mr Lebrun said, "Generally, to have long fries, we work with tubers with a diameter of more than 50mm." "Then you get fries of 8 to 9 cm This time, as the tubers are smaller, the fries will be smaller." Belgium is one of the largest exporters of frozen fries in the world, exporting 2.3 million tonnes of frozen fries every year. In the year ending June 2018, Belgium exported 344,000 tons of frozen frites to the UK, a 9.3 percent increase on the previous year, despite Brexit. The Belgian frozen fry industry has been waging a campaign to boost its exports by using a James Bond style character with a "licence to fry". "James Bint" insists the frites are called Belgian, rather than French, fries. |

Korea summit economic pledge raises sanctions-busting fears Posted: 19 Sep 2018 02:52 AM PDT Speaking at a joint news conference in Pyongyang on Wednesday, South Korea's President Moon Jae-in said he and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un agreed to the normalization of the Kaesong joint border industrial park and tours to North Korea's Mount Kumgang. The two projects, which were suspended amid tensions between the rivals under Moon's two conservative predecessors, had been lucrative sources of cash for the impoverished North. Moon said the steps were part of an agreement to turn the Korean peninsula into a "land of peace without nuclear weapons and nuclear threats". |

Cat hiking videos are the wholesome escape you need in your life Posted: 19 Sep 2018 12:45 PM PDT This post is part of Hard Refresh , a soothing weekly column where we try to cleanse your brain of whatever terrible thing you just witnessed on Twitter. Things you can reasonably expect to see on a hike: trees; rocks; streams. Thing you might not expect to see on a hike: A cat on a leash walking with its owner. Turns out that hiking cats are more common than you might think. These adventurous felines can be found on YouTube and Instagram, where they explore rough mountain terrain, rocky beaches, and green pastures. SEE ALSO: What happens when an animal influencer dies? There's something so delightful about watching these pets explore new terrain with such curiosity. While there are lots of videos of hiking cats online, I recommend you check out some of these seasoned feline hikers first. There's Cezar, the traveling cat who's been to France, El Salvador, and Malta. Then there's Honey Bee, the blind cat who loves to spend time outdoors. And finally, there's Paul the cat, whose high-altitude hiking videos will put your own hiking abilities to shame. While most cats are naturally pretty curious, not every cat is built to explore the outside world, according to the Adventure Cats blog. Felines that possess a playful demeanor and an interest in the outside world — and are willing to wear a harness — might make solid hikers. For cat owners intrigued by the idea of bringing their pets on long hikes (or even just outside for a quick walk,) Adventure Cats has a pretty comprehensive guide to getting your pet more comfortable with the great outdoors. But if you're just looking for 15 minutes of nature footage and cute cats, watch a video or two and then daydream of one day climbing a mountain with Whiskers by your side.
