Mexico elections: Who is Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the left-wing rebel tipped to take power? Posted: 01 Jul 2018 07:50 AM PDT Commentators say the former Mexico City mayor, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador – known as 'Amlo' – would inject a new dose of nationalism into government – something that could heighten tensions in already testy US-Mexican relations. Mr Lopez Obrador has led opinion polls throughout the campaign in an election marred by violence, with 130 candidates and political workers killed since September. If he ousts the ruling centrist Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), he would be the first leftist in decades to take the presidency. |

Hong Kong's pro-democracy protesters defiant, but rally turnout hits a low Posted: 01 Jul 2018 05:23 AM PDT By Venus Wu HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong's annual pro-democracy protest saw one of the lowest turnouts in history, as thousands braved sweltering heat to protest against Beijing's tightening grip over the city on Sunday, the 21st anniversary of its return to Chinese rule. Hong Kong's opposition has lost much steam in the past year, which saw elected pro-democracy legislators disqualified and some of the most prominent activists jailed. Against the fall of Hong Kong." Regime reclaims more ground in south Syria: monitor Posted: 01 Jul 2018 12:22 PM PDT A string of rebel-held locations in southern Syria passed into regime control Sunday as the government regained more ground under Russian-brokered deals, a war monitor said. Talks involving rebels, local officials and regime ally Russia saw agreements struck for four villages and a strategic town near the border with Jordan, extending government control to some 60 percent of the southern Daraa province, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. Since June 19, Russia-backed regime forces have ramped up bombardment against opposition fighters in southern Syria as Damascus pushes to retake the area. |

Investors hopeful Mexico's Lopez Obrador will veer to the center Posted: 29 Jun 2018 07:36 PM PDT By Rodrigo Campos NEW YORK (Reuters) - Mexican assets are poised to strengthen even if leftist front-runner Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador wins Sunday's presidential election, analysts say, on expectations he will govern from the center and as the uncertainty stemming from the race fades. Lopez Obrador, a former Mexico City mayor, holds a roughly 20-point lead over his nearest rival ahead of the July 1 vote, according to the latest polls, putting him on track to become the first leftist Mexican president since the 1930s. Strategists at Miami-based Bulltick Capital, however, are among those who believe that Lopez Obrador will pursue centrist policies once in office. |

The man known as "AMLO" kicked off his third presidential bid vowing to use his headstrong personality to fight for the change that so many Mexicans are demanding this election year. The Alnitak group captured footage of the shark, which it said was five metres (16 feet) long, on Thursday in the seas off Cabrera island and followed it for over an hour, it said on its Facebook page, posting a picture. The supreme court has taken a sledgehammer to the New Deal Posted: 30 Jun 2018 03:00 AM PDT Of the three decisions the US supreme court handed down this week, the gay wedding cake case and travel ban cases were the latest battles in the culture wars that Republicans long have waged. The Janus decision declaring that public sector employees cannot be required to pay fees to the unions that represent them went beyond culture to the very meaning of the American government and how Republicans define it. Since the 1930s, when then president Franklin Delano Roosevelt promised to break the hold of moneyed men on the government and broker "a new deal for the American people", a cabal of reactionaries resolved to destroy the new government Democrats created. |
