Posted: 06 Jul 2017 07:56 AM PDT A newly discovered photograph may show that Amelia Earhart survived her mysterious crash, and lived out the rest of her life in Japanese custody. For 80 years, Earhart's fate was unknown, thought to have perished after a suspected plane crash over the Pacific Ocean during an attempt to circumnavigate the globe in 1937. The fresh photo was discovered in America's National Archives, an independent agency that is charged with documenting and preserving historical records related to the US. |
Alaskans may hold key to health care bill, and they have … issues Posted: 06 Jul 2017 11:58 AM PDT Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan of Alaska leave the chamber after a vote on Capitol Hill on May 10. ANCHORAGE — After a bruising and tiring fight in D.C. over health care legislation, both of Alaska's Republican senators returned to the land of the midnight sun to celebrate Independence Day with parades and other activities, including a chainsawing competition. Both of Alaska's senators have played pivotal roles in the debate and could be deciding votes if the bill finally reaches the Senate floor, giving this often-overlooked state with its unique needs and concerns a disproportionate say in shaping the legislation. |
Trump reportedly couldn't find a hotel room in Germany for G20 summit Posted: 06 Jul 2017 04:16 PM PDT For a man who owns a boatload of hotels, you'd think President Donald Trump would have no problem finding a comfortable room to crash. According to reports from local media, Trump had a little trouble finding a hotel room in Hamburg, Germany for his stay during the G20 summit this week. The Hamburger Abendblatt reports that Trump was initially trying to stay at the Four Seasons, but it was apparently already filled up by Saudi Arabia's King Salman's huge crew. SEE ALSO: Donald Trump and the first lady of Poland just had the most awkward handshake Ahead of G20 summit in Hamburg: Local media reports that Trump got rejected by city's top luxury hotel & has to stay in a state residence — Mathieu von Rohr (@mathieuvonrohr) June 26, 2017 According to the Financial Times, Salaman won't even be attending the summit, but will be represented by a former finance minister Mohammed al-Djadaninstead. Regardless, Saudia Arabia rolls deep, and is reportedly occupying all 156 rooms at the Four Seasons. The White House apparently tried to book a room at other luxury hotels in Hamburg, but was unsuccessful because they were all filled up with other world leaders and their guests. BuzzFeed reports that this was due to White House staffers dragging their feet, and anyone who has ever booked a late hotel room can probably understand this pain. But this is the White House. The White House did not immediately respond to Mashable's request for comment or confirmation on Trump's accommodations while in Germany. Rumors spread weeks ago that the White House was considering putting Trump up at a hotel in Berlin, then flying him into the summit every day via helicopter. But alas, it seems Trump finally found a comfy bed to sleep on in Hamburg. Trump will reportedly be staying at the Senate Guest House, a building that was erected in 1868, but has served as the Hamburg Senate guest house since 1965, according to the Associated Press. Here's a photo of the house where Trump is reportedly staying. It looks really nice! Well, as Vox points out, it's possible that this was possibly a major oversight from the State Department, that has only confirmed a handful of positions and is severely understaffed. The G20 summit, which was announced in February of 2016, requires 9,000 hotel rooms to accommodate world leaders, their guests, staff, and security. WATCH: Donald Trump vs. The Dictionary |

Philippines' Duterte vows to eat militants after beheadings Posted: 05 Jul 2017 09:13 PM PDT Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has threatened to eat alive the Islamist militants behind the abduction and beheadings of two Vietnamese sailors in a furious reaction to the killings. The remains of the two hostages, who were kidnapped along with four other crew members of a Vietnamese cargo ship in November last year, were recovered off the southern region of Mindanao by Philippine troops on Wednesday. The military blamed the killings on the notorious kidnap-for-ransom Abu Sayyaf group with a stronghold in the area, and which is known to behead its hostages unless ransom payments are made. |

Blood in the Water: Drone Video Films Whale-Hunting Orcas Posted: 06 Jul 2017 01:15 PM PDT A pod of orcas recently pursued and killed a minke whale off the coast of Kamchatka, Russia, and a member of a marine expedition captured the bloody scene on video from above, using a drone. Researchers with the Far East Russia Orca Project (FEROP) spotted the whale-hunting orcas while on a scientific expedition in Avacha Gulf, southeast of Kamchatka. The scientists spied a group of orcas in pursuit of a minke whale — an unusual sight, because orcas that hunt mammals are few in number and are rarely glimpsed in that region, according to the researchers. |
Posted: 06 Jul 2017 03:40 AM PDT Donald Trump poses an "existential threat" to humanity that must be countered with "urgent and dedicated" action, Noam Chomsky has warned. The linguist and political philosopher identified Mr Trump's stance on global warming and nuclear weapons as the two biggest threats posed by his presidency. Mr Trump last month announced the US would withdraw from the Paris Agreement on climate change, while on Thursday he said he was considering "severe things" following North Korea testing an intercontinental ballistic missile. |
Jerk bear crushes camper's tent and gets her arrested on outstanding warrant Posted: 06 Jul 2017 04:49 PM PDT A bear crashed a camper's tent which ultimately led to her arrest. A woman camping in Centennial Park in Anchorage, Alaska, was rudely awakened by a bear on Tuesday. Police received a phone call from a concerned citizen at approximately 7:30 a.m., claiming that a bear had crashed a tent, possibly with a person inside, the Associated Press reports. SEE ALSO: Angry bear charging a car is a good reminder to leave bears alone When the cops showed up, the bear was gone, and no one responded when they called out for anyone inside the downed tent. However, when police poked a sleeping bag inside the tent, 58-year-old Christine Chalp popped her head out. Chalp claims that she played dead in order to evade the bear. Unfortunately, a bear nearly eating your face is not a good enough excuse to avoid a ticket — or arrest. Police issued Chalp a citation for feeding game after they discovered food and trash around her campsite, which is illegal because it attracts large game such as moose. Oh, yeah, and bears. While issuing the citation, the police discovered that Chalp had a warrant out for her arrest on a misdemeanor failure-to-appear for disorderly conduct, so she was arrested. So basically, this bear blew up her spot which ultimately led to a citation and an arrest. What a jerk. WATCH: 'Golden Girls' starring 4 best dog friends will be your favorite fluffy remake |

Tesla Model S fall short in crash test yet again Posted: 05 Jul 2017 09:46 PM PDT In another setback for the high-flying electric carmaker, Tesla's Model S once again fell short of the top rating in a key crash test, an independent testing agency said Thursday. On the eve of seeing its first mass-market Model 3 roll off the assembly line, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety said that despite changes made to the vehicles produced after January, the Model S was again only able to attain an acceptable rating in the small-overlap test conducted in February. As a result, Tesla failed to achieve the IIHS Top Safety Pick rating, which requires a "good" rating in all five of its crash test scenarios. |

U.S. bombers challenge China in South China Sea flyover Posted: 07 Jul 2017 03:28 AM PDT TOKYO/BEIJING (Reuters) - Two U.S bombers have flown over the disputed South China Sea, the U.S. Air Force said on Friday, asserting the right to treat the region as international territory despite China's claim to virtually all of the waterway. The flight by the B-1B Lancer bombers from Guam on Thursday came as U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping prepare for a meeting on the sidelines of a G20 summit in Germany. The two leaders were expected to discuss what China can do to rein in North Korea's missile and nuclear weapon programs. |

Palestinians, Israelis square off on UNESCO vote on Hebron Posted: 05 Jul 2017 07:22 PM PDT The United Nations' cultural arm will decide whether to declare the Old City of Hebron a protected zone this week, the latest Israeli-Palestinian spat at the international body. Hebron in the occupied West Bank is home to more than 200,000 Palestinians and a few hundred Israeli settlers, who live in a heavily fortified enclave near the site known to Muslims as the Ibrahimi Mosque and to Jews as the Tomb of the Patriarchs. UNESCO's World Heritage Committee is expected to vote Friday on a resolution brought by the Palestinians declaring Hebron's Old City, including where the settlers live, an area of outstanding universal value. |

Poor little dog had to be rescued from lagoon 2 times by police officers Posted: 06 Jul 2017 09:41 PM PDT When a little dog found itself stuck in a lagoon on Wednesday, two brave police officers came to the rescue and pulled the pup out. That, however, was just the beginning of the ordeal. "As soon as the dog's feet hit the ground, without so much as a thank you, it ran off towards the tot lot where several families were playing," the Milwaukee Police Department wrote on Facebook. "Minutes later, there was another splash. The dog jumped back into the water." SEE ALSO: Get the perfect photo of your dog every single time with this gadget This time, the dog was too far out to be reached by a snare or net, so the officers called the fire department for a boat. "While waiting for the boat, they were trying to coax the dog back to shore. After a few minutes the officers could see the animal was starting to struggle in the thick weeds and muck. That's when Officer Spingola said he had to go in." As he was "swimming towards the dog, the dog was struggling to keep afloat. When he reached him, the dog was wrapped up in the weeds, tangled in fishing line and had a hook and bobber hanging from him." As you can see from the video above, the story has a happy ending. Now all they need is for the owner to claim the "happy and healthy" brown poodle mix. WATCH: Teach Your Dog to Text a Selfie |

Outbreak of hantavirus infections kills three in Washington state Posted: 06 Jul 2017 08:32 PM PDT Five people have been stricken with the rare, rodent-borne hantavirus illness in Washington state since February, three of whom have died, in the state's worst outbreak of the disease in at least 18 years, public health officials reported on Thursday. The three fatal cases also mark the highest death toll from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in Washington state during a single year since the respiratory ailment was first identified in the "Four Corners" region of the U.S. Southwest in 1993. Victims in the latest outbreak were men and women ranging in age from their 20s to their 50s from four counties across the state, said David Johnson, spokesman for the Washington State Department of Health. |

'US-led strikes killed 224 civilians since allies entered Raqa' Posted: 06 Jul 2017 06:44 AM PDT US-led coalition air strikes have killed at least 224 civilians since the Syrian forces it backs entered Islamic State group bastion Raqa a month ago, a monitor said on Thursday. Arab and Kurdish fighters from the Syrian Democratic Forces broke into Raqa on June 6 after a months-long operation to encircle the northern city. "At least 224 civilians, including 38 children and 28 women, have been killed in air strikes by the global coalition on Raqa since the SDF entered it," said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. |
U.S. appeals court denies Hawaii bid to narrow Trump travel ban Posted: 07 Jul 2017 04:39 PM PDT By Dan Levine SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court on Friday rejected Hawaii's request to issue an emergency order blocking parts of President Donald Trump's temporary travel ban while the state sought clarification over what groups of people would be barred from travel. The U.S. Supreme Court last month let the ban on travel from six Muslim-majority countries go forward with a limited scope, saying it could not apply to anyone with a credible "bona fide relationship" with a U.S. person or entity. The Trump administration then decided that spouses, parents, children, fiancés and siblings would be exempt from the ban, while grandparents and other family members traveling from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen would be barred. |
