FBI arrests leader of armed group stopping migrants in New Mexico Posted: 22 Apr 2019 07:40 AM PDT The arrest came two days after the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) accused the group of illegally detaining migrants and New Mexico's Democratic Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham ordered an investigation. Hopkins, 69, also known as Johnny Horton, was arrested in Sunland Park, New Mexico, on a federal complaint charging him with being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said in a statement. "We're not worried about it, he's going to be cleared," said Jim Benvie, a spokesman for the United Constitutional Patriots (UCP), blaming his arrest on political pressure from Lujan Grisham. |

Comedian upsets Ukraine's president in landslide election victory Posted: 21 Apr 2019 11:40 AM PDT A comedian who plays the president on television has turned art into real life in a landslide election against the incumbent in conflict-torn Ukraine, according to exit polls. Volodymyr Zelenskiy, 41, had 73 per cent of the vote against 26 per cent for Petro Poroshenko, 53, who was elected after protests toppled a pro-Russian leader in 2014. The story is remarkably similar to the hit show Servant of the People, where a teacher played by Mr Zelenskiy is elected president on the strength of a viral video rant. A lack of reform since the 2014 revolution has fuelled support for the outsider promising to fight corruption and leave after one term. Mr Zelenskiy easily won the first round of voting albeit without a majority. But his superficial campaign of comedy shows and social media videos has offered little insight on how the political neophyte will achieve this with a parliament mostly allegiant to Mr Poroshenko. "Thank you to all Ukrainians, wherever you are located. I promise I will never let you down," Mr Zelenskiy said in a victory speech that lasted less than three minutes. "To all citizens of post-Soviet countries: Look at us. Anything is possible," he added. Mr Poroshenko congratulated his opponent on victory shortly after the polls closed, saying the election had been fair and shown Ukraine to be an "independent European country". The candidate previously betrayed his inexperience when he posed with his filled-in ballot on Sunday, a violation of election laws that earned him a police citation. Now the poorest country in Europe, Ukraine and its 42 million people stand at the forefront of tensions between Russia and the West, fighting a low-level conflict with Moscow-backed separatists that continues to claim lives. Mr Zelenskiy has said he would meet Vladimir Putin and involve the UK and United States in new talks to solve the conflict, but also promised not to lift the economic blockade on the separatist-held areas. An advisor to the Kremlin told The Telegraph that a plan reported last week to give Russian passports to residents of these breakaway republics was meant as a test for the incoming Ukrainian leader. Before casting his ballot, Mr Poroshenko went to a service at St Michael's monastery in Kiev, highlighting his success in obtaining recognition for a new Ukrainian Orthodox church independent of Russia. President Petro Poroshenko casts his vote on Sunday Credit: Sergei Supinsky/AFP Ukraine is now the only country besides Israel with a Jewish president and prime minister, as both Mr Zelenskiy and Volodymyr Groysman have Jewish heritage. Sunday's vote ended a dirty campaign that culminated in a venomous debate at Kiev's 70,000-seat Olympic stadium on Friday evening. Mr Poroshenko has been accused of "black PR" against his opponent following a video showing Mr Zelenskiy being hit by a lorry. A format where the candidates asked questions of each other quickly devolved into recriminations touching on the scandals in which both have been embroiled. Returning to central motifs of his campaign, Mr Poroshenko said Mr Zelenskiy was unprepared to stand up to Vladimir Putin and suggested he was a puppet of self-exiled oligarch Ihor Kolomoisky, owner of the channel that broadcasts his shows. Mr Zelenskiy pointed out that the president was the owner of a candy-making empire that until 2017 had a factory in Russia, accusing him of enriching his friends while in power. He repeatedly threatened to put Mr Poroshenko on trial. The president dismissed Mr Zelenskiy's allegations as "rubbish". The spectre of Mr Kolomoisky will continue to loom over Mr Zelenskiy as president, however. Just days before the vote, a court ruled that the oligarch's PrivatBank was illegally nationalised after a $5.5 billion hole was found in its accounts. Any move to hand the bank back is sure to be opposed by the international monetary fund, a vital creditor for Ukraine. A Femen activist staged a topless protest outside a Kiev polling station on Sunday, warning that a Zelenskiy presidency end up being a "funny mistake". Mr Poroshenko said in his conciliatory remarks that he would not leave politics but rather continue to fight for reform. He and former PM Yulia Tymoshenko may be planning "to take their revenge during the parliamentary elections" in October, analyst Volodymyr Fesenko told The Telegraph. The prime minister's position could become even more important if lawmakers attempt long-discussed reforms to strip some powers from the president. Russia's troll factory was also accused of buying Ukrainians' Facebook accounts to spread disinformation before the vote. Last week, the authorities arrested seven men in what they said was a Russian plot to assassinate Ukrainian officials. One of the men injured himself when a car bomb he was setting in Kiev exploded in his face. |
Tesla pushes forward on autonomous driving with new computer chip Posted: 22 Apr 2019 01:59 PM PDT Tesla on Monday unveiled computer hardware for "full self-driving" capabilities as part of its strategy to bring autonomous cars to the mainstream. At an investor presentation, the electric carmaker revealed technical details of a new chip and computer being installed in all its vehicles to advance its goals for autonomous driving. Tesla already enables partial autonomy for its cars, but the road to full autonomy faces considerable legal and regulatory hurdles. |
Posted: 22 Apr 2019 01:13 AM PDT A beautiful spring morning at the Topeka Zoo in Kansas turned tragic when a male Sumatran tiger attacked a keeper, inflicting wounds that sent her to a hospital.Although keepers are never supposed to be in the same space as the tigers, they found themselves together in the outdoor habitat that morning for reasons under investigation."There's some sort of error that occurred here," said Brendan Wiley, the zoo's director, told a news conference. He confirmed that several visitors to the zoo had witnessed the attack. The employee is the zoo's primary tiger keeper and had worked there for years, according to Mr Wiley, who noted that part of her job is to clean and maintain the enclosure. He said that the keeper was in stable condition and that the zoo was reviewing its safety protocols. The zookeeper, whom Mr Wiley declined to name, citing her family's need for privacy, suffered "lacerations and punctures" to the back of the head, neck, back and arm. She was awake and alert when she was transported to a hospital. The attack occurred about 9:15 am and the zoo's safety protocols immediately went into effect, Mr Wiley said. A radio call alerted the staff that there was an emergency, and the zoo called 911. Nearby staff members responded to the scene to secure the tigers, and an official made the decision to temporarily close the zoo. A firearms response team also was dispatched to the tiger exhibit, but zookeepers had successfully lured the tiger away by the time it arrived."Some of our staff witnessed some things that you hope you go through a career without witnessing," Mr Wiley said. The zoo has two adult Sumatran tigers: Jingga, a female, and Sanjiv, who was brought to the zoo in August 2017. Shanna Simpson, animal care supervisor, told the Topeka Capital-Journal then that Sanjiv "is the sweetest cat I have ever met."In October, Jingga gave birth to four cubs - three males and one female. The Topeka Zoo allowed Jingga and her cubs back into their enclosures Saturday afternoon, but Sanjiv would remain in holding overnight, Mr Wiley said.City spokeswoman Molly Hadfield said in an email that "nothing will happen to the tiger; he is a wild animal and was acting on instinct."Sanjiv is too valuable to conservation efforts to euthanise. Sumatran tigers are critically endangered, and only about 400 remain in the wild, according to the World Wildlife Fund. They are native to Indonesia, where deforestation, human encroachment and poaching have whittled their numbers to the brink of extinction. Some zoos participate in Sumatran tiger conservation programs designed to save the species, but these efforts are not always successful. In February, a male tiger brought to the London Zoo to mate attacked and killed its prospective female partner. The Washington Post |

Serbia pledges 1 million euros for Notre-Dame restoration Posted: 22 Apr 2019 06:07 AM PDT Serbia on Monday said it will donate one million euros to help restore Notre-Dame Cathedral, after pro-government tabloids said the fire was "God's punishment" to France. The gift comes after two tabloids, Alo and Informer, said the blaze was divine retribution after Kosovo's flag was displayed inside the cathedral during World War I centennial commemorations in Paris last year. Serbia does not recognise the independence of Kosovo, a former southern province that broke away in a 1998-99 war. |

Pakistan's Prime Minister Khan in Iran to talk security, ties Posted: 21 Apr 2019 09:01 AM PDT Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan arrived in Iran on Sunday to discuss security and regional issues, Iranian state TV reported, a day after Islamabad urged Tehran to act against militants behind killings in Pakistan's Baluchistan province. A new umbrella group representing various insurgent groups operating in Baluchistan claimed responsibility for an attack on Thursday when 14 passengers were killed after being kidnapped from buses in the province, which borders Iran. Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said on Saturday the training and logistical camps of the new alliance that carried out the attack were inside Iran and called for Iran to take action against the insurgents. |
How 11 People Are Trying to Stop Fake News in the World’s Largest Election Posted: 22 Apr 2019 12:20 AM PDT One of the operations most vital to Facebook Inc. at this moment is a world away from its Menlo Park, California, headquarters, and in more ways than one. This is Boom Live, one of seven tiny fact-checking firms at the heart of Facebook's efforts to rebuild some of its credibility during India's elections. Based on the early tallies, more than 60 percent of India's 900 million eligible voters are expected to cast ballots between now and May 19, as the center-left Congress Party tries to seize power from the right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party. |
US STOCKS-Wall Street dips ahead of earnings deluge Posted: 22 Apr 2019 07:22 AM PDT U.S. stocks pulled back slightly on Monday as investors awaited a barrage of major earnings reports this week, the busiest this earnings season, while a jump in energy stocks kept losses in check. Boeing Co was down 1.1% after the New York Times reported the company's factory in South Carolina, which makes the 787 Dreamliner, has been plagued by "shoddy production and weak oversight." Another report on Sunday said the planemaker rejected the allegations. |

Meghan McCain Blows Up Over Mueller Report; Whoopi Goldberg Cuts Her Off Posted: 22 Apr 2019 10:37 AM PDT The ViewReturning from a week-long break, The View began Monday's broadcast reacting to the recently released Mueller report. Naturally, that segment ended with Whoopi Goldberg cutting off conservative co-host Meghan McCain during a tirade claiming Democrats are going to get President Trump re-elected by "demonizing" all Republicans. In response to Sen. Mitt Romney's (R-UT) highly critical statement of Trump following the report—which found Trump repeatedly tried to obstruct the Russia probe—co-host Sunny Hostin said the Utah senator would still likely not vote for impeachment if it reached the Senate. Romney and other Republicans, he said, will ultimately refuse to hold Trump accountable.Former Fox News host Abby Huntsman jumped in to debate both Hostin and co-host Joy Behar, noting that Trump's base feels like he "got a big win" from the report because the media set an expectation that "he was going to be booted out." Behar and Hostin, meanwhile, pointed out that Trump's overall approval rating went down to 37 percent—and that's where McCain jumped in for her take."Then what's the problem?" McCain asked. "So he's the worst president in history. According to our legal analyst, there's so much in this report that is damning and whatever. Then what's the problem? Why is everyone so nervous about 2020? If this is the nail in the coffin..."Behar snapped back that she is "afraid the Russians will steal the election again," which prompted McCain to call her "irrational.""What's the rational answer?!" Behar, McCain's regular sparring partner, exclaimed."Unfortunately for Democrats, you got to get out there and win over the voters you lost in the middle of the country," McCain replied with one of her most recurring talking points. When one woman in the audience applauded, McCain turned and thanked her."I always took Trump seriously," she continued. "You can go back and check the receipts when I worked at Fox and on my radio show. I always took Trump seriously. This mess that we all got ourselves into, I blame the left as much as the right, and the demonizing of all conservatives in this country, all Trump supporters in every way. You're getting him re-elected."When Hostin pressed once more, "But what about his behavior?" McCain replied, "It came out that there was nothing that collude—that he didn't collude." (The report actually doesn't make a determination on "collusion, which has no legal definition.)As McCain continued to shout, she then invoked her late father, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ). "I accepted the Magnitsky Award in London on behalf of my father," she exclaimed. "I'm someone who has been speaking out against Russia, by the way—let me finish!"As she continued to shout at her colleagues, Goldberg calmly mouthed to the camera that the segment had to wrap. McCain, meanwhile, continued to rant.Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Send it to The Daily Beast here |
Here's An Idea: The Air Force Builds 200 B-21 Stealth Bombers Posted: 21 Apr 2019 07:00 PM PDT The B-21 has disappeared into the "black" world of military technology, and will only reemerge when the bomber is ready. On October 27, 2015, nearly thirty-four years to the day after Northrop Grumman was awarded the contract to develop the first stealth bomber, the U.S. Air Force awarded Northrop a contract for a new bomber: the B-21 Raider. While many of the details of the Raider are shrouded in mystery, we do know a few things about it, and can infer others.(This first appeared in 2017.)The B-21 Raider bomber takes its name from both the twenty-first century and the legendary 1942 raid by Gen. James "Jimmy" Doolittle's force of B-25 Mitchell bombers against targets in and around Tokyo, Japan. In invoking the Doolittle Raid, the Air Force is drawing attention to attack's audacious nature, the strategic and tactical surprise, and the epic distances General Doolittle and his "raiders" flew to accomplish their mission.Recommended: Why Doesn't America Just Kill Kim Jong-un? |
Who was behind the Sri Lanka bombings? Everything we know so far about the Easter Sunday attacks Posted: 22 Apr 2019 04:19 PM PDT Easter Day bomb blasts at three Sri Lankan churches and four hotels killed 290 people and wounded around 500, following a lull in major attacks since the end of the civil war 10 years ago. The explosions, some of which officials said were suicide bomb attacks, led to an immediate clampdown, with the government declaring a curfew and blocking access to most major social media and messaging sites. What happened? The powerful blasts - six in quick succession and then two more hours later - wrought devastation, including at the capital's well-known St Anthony's Shrine, a historic Catholic Church. The three hotels hit in the initial attacks were the Shangri-La Colombo, Kingsbury Hotel in Colombo and the Cinnamon Grand Colombo. pic gallery The first six explosions were all reported within a short period in the morning just as church services were starting. Hours later there were two further attacks in the outskirts of Colombo. Police the attacks were carried out by suicide bombers. Who were the victims? The death toll rose to almost 300 on Monday and was expected to rise further still. There were hundreds of people injured in hospitals. There were eight British citizens killed in the attack, two of whom had dual US nationality. Ben Nicholson said his wife Anita, 42, son Alex, 14, and daughter Annabel, 11, had been killed as they sat at a table for breakfast in the Shangri-la Hotel in Colombo on Easter Sunday. "Mercifully, all three of them died instantly and with no pain or suffering," Mr Nicholson said. Ben Nicholson (right) with the other members of his family who were killed Daniel Linsey, 19 and his younger sister Amelie, 15, were having breakfast with their father Matthew at the luxury Shangri-La Hotel when the suicide bomber struck. Dr Sally Bradley and her husband Bill Harrop were staying in the Cinnamon Grand Hotel when one of the seven suicide bombers struck. The Manchester couple had been living in the Australian city of Perth since 2013 where Dr Bradley was practising medicine, but were due to return to the UK soon. Read more | Sri Lanka attacks Tulip Siddiq, the Labour MP for Hampstead and Kilburn, said she lost a relative in the attacks. "It is all so devastating," she wrote on Twitter. "Solidarity with the people of Sri Lanka." The first American victim of the Sri Lanka terror attack has been named as 40-year-old Dieter Kowalski. Mr Kowalski, from Denver, Colorado, checked into the luxury Cinnamon Grand Hotel in Colombo just hours before it was targeted by the bombers. Sri Lanka's foreign ministry said the nationalities of 11 foreigners killed in the Easter Sunday blasts have been verified. Three Indians, one Portuguese and two Turkish nationals were killed, while a further nine foreigners were also reported missing. A Dutch national and a Chinese national also have been reported among the victims. Read more about the victims. Who was behind the attacks? A Sri Lankan government official said the attacks were carried out by seven suicide bombers from a domestic militant group named National Thowfeek Jamaath. There was no claim of responsibility on Monday. All of the bombers were Sri Lankan citizens, but authorities suspect foreign links, Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne said at a news conference. Earlier, Ariyananda Welianga, a government forensic crime investigator, said an analysis of the attackers' body parts made clear that they were suicide bombers. He said most of the attacks were carried out by a single bomber, with two at Colombo's Shangri-La Hotel. Documents seen by AFP show that Sri Lanka's police chief Pujuth Jayasundara issued an intelligence alert to top officers 10 days ago, warning that suicide bombers planned to hit "prominent churches". "A foreign intelligence agency has reported that the NTJ (National Thowheeth Jama'ath) is planning to carry out suicide attacks targeting prominent churches as well as the Indian high commission in Colombo," the alert said. The NTJ is a radical Muslim group in Sri Lanka that was linked last year to the vandalism of Buddhist statues. Key intelligence on a possible terrorist attack was not passed onto the Sri Lankan government weeks before the attack. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe acknowledged late on Sunday that "information was there" about possible attacks, adding that "we must also look into why adequate precautions were not taken." How did Sri Lanka react? The government beefed up security and imposed an immediate and indefinite curfew across the country. It also put in place a "temporary" ban on social media platforms "in order to prevent incorrect and wrong information being spread". Security at Colombo's airport was also enhanced, according to Sri Lankan Airlines, which advised its passengers to arrive four hours before their flights. It added that passengers with passports and tickets will be able to reach the airport during the curfew. he front page of a Sri Lankan newspaper, showing coverage of the Easter Sunday blasts, hangs at a newsstand in Colombo Credit: AFP The Archbishop of Colombo, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, called on Sri Lanka's government to "mercilessly" punish those responsible "because only animals can behave like that." Two Muslim groups in Sri Lanka also condemned the church attacks. The Muslim Council of Sri Lanka said it mourned the loss of innocent people in the blasts by extremists who seek to divide religious and ethnic groups. The All Ceylon Jammiyyathul Ulama a body of Muslim clerics, said targeting Christian places of worship cannot be accepted. Embassies in Sri Lanka have warned their citizens to shelter in place. Turkish opposition leader safe after attack at soldier's funeral Posted: 21 Apr 2019 11:55 AM PDT Kemal Kilicdaroglu, head of the secularist Republican People's Party (CHP) that pulled off victories in the March 31 vote, had attended a funeral for one of four Turkish soldiers killed on Friday in clashes with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, whose AK Party wants the election results annulled in Istanbul, had repeatedly warned during last month's campaign that PKK members were among the CHP's list of candidates. The PKK clashes in the country's southeast on Friday prompted several pro-government newspapers to tie the soldiers' deaths to the CHP. |

Why the Smith & Wesson M&P Bodyguard .380 Is Tough to Beat Posted: 21 Apr 2019 04:00 AM PDT Newfound consumer interest in the subcompact handgun has led many gun manufacturers to introduce smaller––but still potent––pistols that can be carried discretely as a backup gun or concealed carry piece. But which ones are worth your time and money? One such example is the Smith & Wesson M&P; Bodyguard 380. One of the best of the new generation of subcompact handguns, it also has the most favorable dimensions and weight for those requiring packable firepower. The Smith & Wesson M&P; Bodyguard 380 is a second generation subcompact pistol that takes over from––and is functionally identical to––the first generation Bodyguard. The pistol is a small frame, double action semi-automatic designed for concealed carry. Unlike the larger M&P; handguns it is not a striker fired weapon, instead using a more traditional hammer and firing pin operating system. The gun lacks an external hammer, making it incapable of single action fire and the lighter trigger pull that entails. The double action hammer pull is rated by reviewers at 9.5 pounds and is described as "smooth" and "easy to use." |

Cain, 73, is bowing out after a path to Senate confirmation appeared blocked. A fourth Senate Republican said earlier this month he'd oppose Cain. |

The four men, wanted by Iraqi authorities, were handed to Iraq by the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the statement said. US Social Security costs to surpass income next year Posted: 22 Apr 2019 12:08 PM PDT The cost of Social Security, the US public retirement system, will outstrip its revenues next year for the first time in nearly four decades, its trustees said Monday. This will begin eroding the roughly $3 trillion trust fund for Social Security, putting it on track to be depleted by 2035 -- a year later than a prior forecast, the board of trustees said in an annual report. More than 60 million Americans currently depend on the Depression-era program for retirement and disability benefits. |

Seth Moulton, the 20th Declared Democratic Candidate, Enters 2020 Race Posted: 22 Apr 2019 03:04 AM PDT Brian Snyder / ReutersRep. Seth Moulton (D-MA), the 40-year-old veteran who is in his third term in Congress, is running for president. "Whether it's appointing a Cabinet member, negotiating a treaty, or signing an executive order, I will always uphold America's values," Moulton said in his announcement video. "I'm running because we have to beat Donald Trump, and I want us to beat Donald Trump because I love this country. We've never been a country that gets everything right. But we're a country that, at our best, thinks that we might. I'd be honored if you'd join me in this mission."After spending time in early-voting states over the past few months, he announced his candidacy on Good Morning America, officially becoming the 20th candidate to compete for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. His campaign will emphasize organizing young people and veterans on the ground and aides to Moulton say they've heard positive receptions to a younger candidate who can focus on issues of national security, defense, and foreign policy in contrast to President Trump. Moulton has recently spent time in early-voting states and his Serve America PAC contributed more than $4 million to candidates in the 2018 cycle, with staff on the ground working to flip almost two dozen House seats. In the run-up to his announcement, Moulton has given a speech on foreign policy, including arms control and re-examining NATO, called for the creation of a Federal Green Jobs Corps and an electoral reform plan and said both the Electoral College and the Senate filibuster should be abolished. Moulton was heavily criticized for his efforts to keep House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) from leading the party after Democrats won a majority in the House of Representatives last year, protestations that included angry constituents at a town-hall meeting and potential primary challengers. Moulton eventually backed her speakership after coming to a deal that included term limits for the leadership positions of the House's top Democrats. More recently, Moulton has said Pelosi has done a good job in her role. One of his other competitors in the 2020 race, Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH), also led the charge for new leadership and previously challenged Pelosi for the position of minority leader in 2016. When that vote was taken, another 2020 contender, former Rep. Beto O'Rourke (D-TX) supported Ryan. Following the formal launch of his campaign, Moulton will participate in an aggressive media tour, including an interview with MSNBC's Rachel Maddow, a must-stop for Democratic presidential aspirants as of late. And throughout the rest of the week, he'll be heading back to early-voting states for campaign events. The number of candidates is not expected to remain at 20 for long, as former Vice President Joe Biden is poised to enter the race this week as well. Read more at The Daily Beast. |
Air strikes and explosions hit Libyan capital Posted: 20 Apr 2019 06:10 PM PDT Several air strikes and explosions shook the Libyan capital Tripoli overnight, residents said, in an escalation of a two-week offensive by eastern forces on the city held by the internationally recognised government. A Reuters reporter and several residents said they saw an aircraft circling for more than 10 minutes over the capital late on Saturday, and that it made a humming sound before opening fire on several areas. An aircraft was heard again after midnight, circling for more than ten minutes before a heavy explosion shook the ground. It was not clear whether an aircraft or unmanned drone was behind the strike, which triggered heavy anti aircraft fire. Residents had reported drone strikes in recent days, but there has been no confirmation and explosions heard in the city centre this time were louder than in previous days. Residents counted several missile strikes, one of which apparently hit a military camp of forces loyal to Tripoli in the Sabaa district in the south of the capital, scene of the heaviest fighting between the rival forces. Authorities closed Tripoli's only functioning airport, cutting air links to a city of an estimated 2.5 million residents. The airport in Misrata, a city 200 km to the east, remained open. A vehicle belonging to Libyan fighters loyal to the Government of National Accord (GNA) is pictured during clashes with forces loyal to strongman Khalifa Haftar south of the capital Tripoli's suburb of Ain Zara Credit: MAHMUD TURKIA/AFP The Libyan National Army (LNA) force loyal to commander Khalifa Haftar started an offensive two weeks ago but has been unable to breach the government's southern defences. If a drone strike was confirmed this would point to more sophisticated warfare. The LNA has so far mainly used ageing Soviet-made jets from the air force of Muammar Gaddafi, toppled in 2011, lacking precision firepower and helicopters, according to residents and military sources. In the past the United Arab Emirates and Egypt have supported Haftar with air strikes during campaigns to take eastern Libya. Both countries flew air strikes on Tripoli in 2014 during a different conflict to help a Haftar-allied force, US officials said at the time. Since 2014 the UAE and Egypt have provided the LNA with military equipment such as aircraft and helicopters, helping Haftar gain the upper hand in Libya's eight-year conflict, U.N. reports have established. The UAE even built an air base in Al Khadim in eastern Libya, one such report said in 2017. The air strikes, which were also filmed by residents in video posted online, came after a day of heavy clashes in southern districts, with shelling audible in the city centre. The violence spiked after the White House said on Friday that US President Donald Trump spoke by telephone with Haftar earlier in the week. The disclosure of the call and a U.S. statement that it "recognized Field Marshal Haftar's significant role in fighting terrorism and securing Libya's oil resources" has boosted the commander's supporters and enraged his opponents. Western powers and the Gulf have been divided over a push by Haftar's forces to seize Tripoli, undermining calls by the United Nations for a ceasefire. Both sides claimed progress in southern Tripoli on Saturday, but no more details were immediately available. A Reuters TV cameraman visiting the southern Khalat Furgan suburb heard heavy shelling but saw no apparent change in the frontline. On Friday, two children were killed in shelling in southern Tripoli, residents said. The fighting has killed 227 people and wounded 1,128, the World Heath organization (WHO) said before the air strikes. On Thursday, both the United States and Russia said they could not support a U.N. Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in Libya at this time. Russia objects to the British-drafted resolution blaming Haftar for the latest flare-up in violence when his LNA advanced to the outskirts of Tripoli earlier this month, diplomats said. The United States did not give a reason for its decision not to support the draft resolution, which would also call on countries with influence over the warring parties to ensure compliance and for unconditional humanitarian aid access in Libya. |
