Nigerian vice president back home after London visit to ailing president Posted: 12 Jul 2017 02:30 AM PDT Nigeria's Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has returned to Abuja after a brief and unexplained visit to President Muhammadu Buhari, who is on sick leave in London, his spokesman said on Twitter on Wednesday. The unannounced and brief trip has fuelled speculation over Buhari's illness, the details of which have not been made public, and whether he will be able to stand in the 2019 elections. Osinbajo's spokesman did not give a reason for the visit and declined to comment when asked. |
'Earhart' photo taken years before disappearance: expert Posted: 12 Jul 2017 06:34 AM PDT A photograph supposedly showing Amelia Earhart alive in the Marshall Islands in 1937 that caused a stir earlier this month is from a Japanese book published years before the famed aviatrix disappeared, a military expert said Wednesday. The blurry image apparently showing a white woman sitting on a Marshallese dock generated worldwide interest when it was included in a History Channel documentary screened last weekend. It renewed interest in the fate of the legendary American and her navigator Fred Noonan who disappeared over the Pacific in July 1937 while attempting an around-the-world flight. |
Isil leader Baghdadi dead, claims Syrian war monitor Posted: 11 Jul 2017 05:32 AM PDT Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, leader of Islamic State, is dead, according to a Syrian war monitor. "(We have) confirmed information from leaders, including one of the first rank, in the Islamic State in the eastern countryside of Deir al-Zor," Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. "We learned of it today but we do not know when he died or how." Russia's defence ministry said last month that it may have killed Baghdadi when one of its air strikes hit a gathering of Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) commanders on the outskirts of the Syrian city of Raqqa, but the US said it could not corroborate the death and Western and Iraqi officials have been sceptical. Russia said the air strike took place on May 28 and claimed a number of Isil's senior leadership, including Baghdadi, was killed. However they have so far offered no proof. News of his death has not been independently verified by the Telegraph. The Pentagon said in a statement released today that the US has no information to corroborate reports. Baghdadi's death had been announced many times before but the Observatory has a track record of credible reporting on Syria's civil war. Baghdadi declared himself the head of Isil's so-called caliphate, spanning across Syria and Iraq, in the summer of 2014. Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in 60 seconds 01:06 He made his first - and only - appearance from the Grand al-Nouri Mosque in Mosul. The claims of his death came a day after Iraq's prime minister Haider al-Abadi declared the city - one of Isil's most important strongholds - fully liberated from the jihadists. The world's most-wanted man has been rumoured wounded or killed a number of times in the past. The last sign of life he gave was in November last year after Iraqi forces supported by the aerial might of the coalition launched their reconquest of Mosul, the country's second city. Inside Baghdadi's neighbourhood 01:28 In an audio recording, he urged his men to defend Mosul to the bitter end and Iraqi elite forces have gained huge ground but are still battling die-hard jihadists around the Old City. Baghdadi was said to have left Mosul earlier this year and has since been reportedly spotted in various areas near the Syrian-Iraqi border. But his whereabouts were never confirmed. Born Ibrahim al-Samarrai, little is known about the 46-year-old Iraqi. He grew up in a religious family, studied Islamic Theology in Baghdad and joined the Salafi jihadist insurgency in 2003, the year of the US-led invasion of Iraq. He was caught by the Americans who released him about a year later as they considered him then as a civilian rather than a military target. He joined, and then broke away, from al-Qaeda in 2013, two years after the capture and killing of the group's leader Osama bin Laden. With others released from US detention, he went on to found Isil's predecessor, Islamic State of Iraq. Taking advantage of the raging war next door, Baghdadi's group gained a foothold in Syria as well as Iraq. Lawsuit claims US has threatened and misled immigrants seeking asylum Posted: 12 Jul 2017 02:23 PM PDT US border officials have systemically blocked asylum seekers from accessing the asylum process, in violation of US and international law, according to a lawsuit filed by immigration advocates on Wednesday. A collection of legal groups brought the suit, which claims that the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and US Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) have put asylum seekers at the US-Mexico border in grave danger by threatening, misleading or rejecting them. |

The Marine Reserves KC-130T plane was heading from Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina on Monday on a mission to transport personnel and equipment to Naval Air Field El Centro, California. Syrian Observatory says it has 'confirmed information' that Islamic State chief is dead Posted: 11 Jul 2017 07:07 AM PDT By Lisa Barrington and Ellen Francis CAIRO/BEIRUT (Reuters) - The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told Reuters on Tuesday that it had "confirmed information" that Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has been killed. The report came just days after the Iraqi army recaptured the last sectors of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, which Baghdadi's forces overran almost exactly three years ago. Russia's Defence Ministry said in June that it might have killed Baghdadi when one of its air strikes hit a gathering of Islamic State commanders on the outskirts of the Syrian city of Raqqa. |

Julian Assange: I urged Trump Jr to publish Russia emails via WikiLeaks Posted: 11 Jul 2017 02:35 PM PDT Julian Assange, the Wikileaks founder, has claimed that he contacted Donald Trump Jr and tried to persuade him to publish emails showing he was eager to accept sensitive information about Hillary Clinton via the anti-secrecy website. Instead, the US president's eldest son did so via Twitter, igniting a firestorm of criticism around his apparent willingness to work with the Russian government against his father's Democratic rival. "Contacted Trump Jr this morning on why he should publish his emails (i.e with us)," tweeted Assange, who is based at the Ecuadorian embassy in London. |
High-speed Hyperloop completes first test run Posted: 12 Jul 2017 10:01 AM PDT The high-speed Hyperloop has completed its first successful test, laying the foundations for a transport system that could cut the 424-mile journey from London to Edinburgh to 50 minutes. Hyperloop One has revealed it completed a test with its first prototype of the radical system, which could eventually feature pods propelled through a vacuum at speeds of up to 760 miles per hour, back in May. Introducing the world's only vehicle that achieves autonomous high-speed propulsion and levitation in a vacuum environment: our pod! pic.twitter.com/f65gD1asu5— HyperloopOne (@HyperloopOne) July 12, 2017 Credit: Hyperloop One The first version of the pod reached 70 miles per hour in the 5.3 second test in the Nevada desert. Hyperloop One said it used just 100 feet of the motor and that this will improve as "the longer the motor the faster we can go". It says it hopes to achieve speeds of 250 miles per hour in the next test. Alongside news of the trial it shared images of how the first Hyperloop One pods could look. Hyperloop CEO: We Want to Go Public in Third Quarter 03:46 It will be some time before the Hyperloop becomes a reality given the complexity of the new technology, but the test marks an important step, according to the company. "For the first time in over 100 years, a new mode of transportation has been introduced. Hyperloop is real, and it's here now," said Shervin Pishevar, co-founder and executive chairman of Hyperloop One. "By achieving full vacuum, we essentially invented our own sky in a tube, as if you're flying at 200,000 feet in the air." The company is one of a number of private firms and research groups developing versions of the system, which is the brainchild of Elon Musk. US billionaire Musk launched a competition for organisations to develop a feasible version of the idea back in 2015. A proposed route for the Hyperloop Credit: Hyperloop One California-based Hyperloop One is the first team to unveil a working prototype for the mode of transport and to test it. Its pods are designed to travel in a vacuum using magnetic levitation to reach the superfast speeds. It will further test its preliminary technology in the coming months. The company unveiled its 500m-long test track earlier this year, as well as announcing a number of potential Hyperloop routes in Europe. The nine proposed routes include three in the UK: London to Edinburgh, Cardiff to Glasgow, and Liverpool to Glasgow. Crazy futuristic transport |

Guilty pug has the absolute worst poker face of all time Posted: 11 Jul 2017 08:18 AM PDT Definitive fact: all dogs are good dogs — even when they break stuff. It's hard to blame a pet for doing something wrong because they're just so cute and we just love 'em so much. And because they know we'll snuggle them anyway, even though they've done something wrong, some sneaky pets will act as though they had nothing to do with it, knowing they can trick us into thinking that all the pillows just happened to burst open all on their own. SEE ALSO: Poor little dog had to be rescued from lagoon 2 times by police officers But Twitter user Kai Johnson's pug, Alfie, couldn't hide his guilt for long. U.S. THAAD missile defenses hit test target as North Korea tension rises Posted: 11 Jul 2017 04:56 PM PDT By Phil Stewart and Idrees Ali WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States said on Tuesday it shot down a simulated, incoming intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) similar to the ones being developed by countries like North Korea, in a new test of the nation's THAAD missile defenses. Planned months ago, the U.S. missile defense test over the Pacific Ocean has gained significance after North Korea's July 4 launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) heightened concerns about the threat from Pyongyang. |

Mr Trump took to the social media platform in the morning to defend his son, Donald Trump Jr, amid a scandal that has rocked Washington. After retweeting a video of "Fox and Friends" where the hosts discussed the Senate's decision to delay the August recess to work on a healthcare overhaul, and after applauding his son's TV appearance the night before, Mr Trump claimed that the White House was "functioning perfectly" and that his focus on policy issues leaves him with few spare moments to watch television. |

Iraq and allies violated international law in Mosul battle: Amnesty Posted: 11 Jul 2017 10:49 AM PDT By Stephen Kalin ERBIL, Iraq (Reuters) - Amnesty International said on Tuesday tactics used by Iraqi forces and their U.S.-led coalition allies in the battle for Mosul violated international humanitarian law and might amount to war crimes. The rights group said in a report the Islamic State militant group had also flagrantly violated humanitarian law by deliberately putting civilians in harm's way to shield their fighters and impede the advance of Iraqi and coalition forces. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared victory in Mosul on Monday, three years after Islamic State seized the city and made it the stronghold of a "caliphate" the Sunni Islamist group said would take over the world. |

Giant, record-breaking Super Soaker can cut through glass Posted: 11 Jul 2017 03:09 PM PDT Your favorite childhood summertime toy just got the biggest upgrade. Actually, the world's biggest upgrade. Former NASA engineer Mark Rober unveiled his latest mega-invention, the world's largest Super Soaker, just in time for those summer backyard hangouts. This kind of thing isn't new to Rober. He also helped create the world's largest NERF gun last year and the nicest car horn earlier this year. Rober constructed the giant creation with friend, Bob Clagett, with the end result stretching across at seven feet long. The Super Soaker has all the inner workings of a typical Soaker but with "fancier" parts, as he puts it. In action, the super-large Super Soaker can cut through eggs, glass, watermelon, and all other sorts of things. But the nozzle can also be switched to have lower pressure, so you can have the most epic backyard water-gun battle ever. |

First attempt to impeach President Donald Trump launched by California congressman Posted: 12 Jul 2017 12:29 PM PDT The first bid to impeach President Donald Trump was launched on Wednesday, with a California Democrat filing a long-shot attempt to force Mr Trump from office. Brad Sherman, a Los Angeles area congressman, accused Mr Trump of obstructing investigations into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, in part by firing former FBI Director James Comey. About | Impeachment The move is unlikely to gain momentum, however. Republicans dominate Congress and have so far show no willingness to turn on their president, and Mr Sherman does not even have the backing of many fellow Democrats. The 62-year-old acknowledged that filing the article is "the first step on a very long road." "But if the impulsive incompetency continues, then eventually - many, many months from now - Republicans will join the impeachment effort," he said in a statement. Democratic leaders have distanced themselves from the efforts to impeach, believing it serves only to energise the president's supporters. Mr Sherman's resolution has one co-sponsor, fellow Democrat Al Green of Texas. |
