Posted: 10 Jul 2017 10:33 AM PDT Pictures of the Iraqi soldiers celebrating their defeat of Isis in Mosul marked a milestone in the fight against the Islamist group but it was also a victory for Barack Obama's strategy in the region, a senior Pentagon official has said. While the Iraqi armed forces staged an exhausting nine-month siege around the city of Mosul, the US-led air campaign in Iraq and Syria initiated by the former president appears to have proved successful in weakening Isis forces. The US and its allies, including but not limited to the UK, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Turkey, also provided continual training and advised proxy local forces without sending their own troops into action. |

Thousands flee as tensions escalate over Kashmir Posted: 10 Jul 2017 09:02 AM PDT Thousands of people have fled their homes in Pakistani Kashmir, officials said Monday, as continued shelling between Pakistan and India escalated tensions along the the de-facto border in the disputed Himalayan region. Pakistani authorities confirmed the exodus saying around 3,000 people have left their villages along the Line of Control (LOC) in Abbaspur sector after heavy shelling by Indian troops over the past two weeks. Sajid Hussain, a senior administration official in the area, said most of the people fled from four of the worst affected villages near the LOC in the Pakistani part of Kashmir. |

A year later, injured turtle returns to man who fixed his shell Posted: 10 Jul 2017 03:14 PM PDT A turtle's shell is essential to their protection. A damaged shell makes the creature vulnerable, and can even sometimes be fatal. Luckily, there are heroes that care about the wellbeing of our scaly friends, like this Reddit user's father. SEE ALSO: This adorable baby turtle blob is bringing hope to Southeast Asia On Monday, Daniel Hollenback — who goes by the username Sublimebro — uploaded photos to Reddit of a turtle whose injuries were healed thanks to his father's efforts. The tiny turtle came back a year later looking better than ever. Adorably, the Reddit user's father — presumably the above mentioned Ken — marked a "Ken's Body Shop" on the putty patch. Although Ken's writing didn't survive, the turtle thankfully did, and people made car repair jokes about it. Comment from discussion Muppetude's comment from discussion "Last year my Dad patched up a turtle's cracked shell with body putty. Look who has returned healthy a year later!". Comment from discussion salvagebanana's comment from discussion "Last year my Dad patched up a turtle's cracked shell with body putty. Look who has returned healthy a year later!". Comment from discussion Oryan_18's comment from discussion "Last year my Dad patched up a turtle's cracked shell with body putty. Look who has returned healthy a year later!". Most importantly, Hollenback's father handled the situation just like an animal lover should. Comment from discussion cloudsareneat's comment from discussion "Last year my Dad patched up a turtle's cracked shell with body putty. Look who has returned healthy a year later!". This dad apparently has a history of performing heroic animal deeds. Hollenback uploaded a video of his father playing with a raccoon that they rescued from their attic with the intention to relocate. Faith in humanity and animals has been restored. Can you spot the sneaky leopard hiding in the tree? Posted: 11 Jul 2017 12:29 PM PDT Leopards are experts when it comes to staying hidden, but there was really no need for this big cat to be so shy in front of the camera. German wildlife photographer Ingo Gerlach, who has almost 40 years experience, captured the impressive shot at the Maasai Mara game reserve in Kenya. But can you spot the leopard? Your eyes may be immediately drawn to the unlucky impala hanging from the tree branches, but take a closer look and you'll spot the hidden killer. Did you spot the leopard? Credit: Ingo Gerlach / Caters The hungry leopard can be seen climbing up the tree trunk to retrieve its dinner, left high in the branches to stop rivals from stealing its food. "Mostly I'm in Europe and in Kenya. This results in images that are unique. And that is saying something in today's flood of images," Gerlach explains on his website [translated]. Astudy published in the Journal of Animal Ecology in April examined in further detail why leopards hoist their food into trees. "Leopards exhibit a unique form of short-term food caching, regularly hoisting, storing and consuming prey in trees," researchers explained. "Leopards hoisted 51% of kills. They were more likely to hoist kills of an intermediate size ... and in response to the presence of some competitors." They said the prey was most likely to be eaten by hyaenas if left on the ground, using data from 2032 prey items killed by 104 leopards from 2013 to 2015. Gerlach has captured a number of impressive 'spot the animal' photos published in the media. You can see more of his work on Facebook. It was titled, "It's 2017 and Mental Health is still an issue in the workplace." "It's 2017," he wrote. "I cannot believe that it is still controversial to speak about mental health in the workplace when 1 in 6 americans are medicated for mental health. "It's 2017. Immigration Forces Sweden to Re-Evaluate Its Welfare State Posted: 09 Jul 2017 09:01 PM PDT When he was in his early 20s, Jacek Dabrowski earned money by visiting Sweden during the summer months and working in the construction industry. Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8 design was just leaked by the CEO of a case maker Posted: 10 Jul 2017 07:06 AM PDT Back in late June, BGR confirmed the Galaxy Note 8's final design with an exclusive leak showing a 3D CAD drawing from a factory that will be producing the phone. Prior to our exclusive report, there had been a bit of debate regarding several key aspects of the new Note 8's design. Any remaining questions were answered by that leak, however, and the debates for the most part were over. Well, if you still weren't 100% convinced that the Galaxy Note 8 design we showed off was the genuine article, there's now yet another piece of evidence to consider. The CEO of a well-known smartphone case and skin company has posted new 3D drawings of the Note 8, and they align perfectly with the digital drawing we shared last month. Jonathan Endicott is the CEO of a company called Slickwraps, which makes cases and skins for iPhones and a wide range of Android devices. Like other third-party case makers, Slickwraps stands to benefit from getting its hands on smartphone designs because the handsets are released. This way, the company can have products ready for phones as soon as they're released. After all, early adopters swoop in to buy new phones as quickly as possible, and they want new cases to go with them. Endicott declined to reveal exactly where his intel comes from, but he took to Twitter with not one but two posts showing what appear to be 3D drawings of Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Note 8 flagship phablet. They're not quite as detailed as the image we leaked last month, but they reaffirm the same design. Here are the images he posted: Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy Note 8 during a press conference in late August, and the phone is shaping up to be quite impressive in terms of specs. |

Researchers searching for signs of extraterrestrial life just got some very bad news Posted: 10 Jul 2017 10:22 AM PDT By using Earth and our sun as a reference, scientists have spent decades honing in on the conditions required for a planet to support life. The identification of the so-called "Goldilocks zone," which is the area around a star in which liquid water can exist on the surface of a planet, has been the key for researchers spotting exoplanets which are good candidates for extraterrestrial life. Unfortunately, new research conducted by astronomers at the University of Hull in England suggests that there's plenty of stars in our own galaxy that simply cannot support life whatsoever, and it's a huge bummer.
The study was initially prompted by research from 2013 which proposed that as many as 70 billion of the up to 400 billion stars in our galaxy were of the "failed" brown dwarf variety. Brown dwarf stars are too hot to support life on their surface, but too cold to provide much heat to any planets that might be in their orbit. This results in a star which has no "Goldilocks zone," and essentially rules out the possibility that life exists on the surface of the planets nearby. Using that earlier study as a baseline, the team set its sights on a nearby star cluster in an attempt to estimate how many brown dwarf stars it contained. The density of the "failed" stars in that cluster led the researchers to conclude that the 70 billion estimate reached in 2013 for our own Milky Way might actually be much lower than reality. The team now believes that as many as 100 billion of the 400-billion-or-so stars in our galactic backyard might be brown dwarves. That means that, potentially, a full quarter or more of the stars nearest us can't even provide the conditions required for the formation and support of life. It's not great news in the search for aliens, but with astronomers already spotting systems with multiple potentially life-support planets like Trappist-1, there's no reason to rule out the possibility of meeting ET one day. |
Grooms marry in same-sex Muslim wedding to show the world you can be gay and Muslim Posted: 11 Jul 2017 08:59 AM PDT A couple from the UK have married in traditional Muslim attire in what could be the UK's first same-sex marriage involving a Muslim person. SEE ALSO: Teacher posts inclusive note on door in wake of Trump's America Jahed Choudhury, 24, and Sean Rogan, 19, claim to be the first couple to have a same-sex Muslim marriage. The pair got hitched in Islamic dress at a registry office in Walsall, West Midlands, on 22 June. The couple — who've been together since 2015 — hope other gay Muslims will see their wedding and find the courage to come out to their loved ones. They want to show the world it's possible to be gay and Muslim. "I just hope other gay Muslims see this as well," Choudhury told the Express and Star. "And they know that they've got support from other gay people," Rogan added. Choudhury told the Express and Star he felt like the "black sheep" of his Bangladeshi Muslim family and he'd been repeatedly bullied at school, banned from his mosque, and attacked by other Muslims from his community. "I stood out like a sore thumb – I never liked football, I preferred watching fashion shows on TV. I remember feeling trapped," said Choudhury. "It went all over school, people would spit on me, empty the rubbish bins on me, call me pig and the Muslim people would shout 'haram' — which is a very nasty insult in my language." A post shared by Prince Jahéd and prince sean (@official_jayseanchou) on Jul 4, 2017 at 5:09pm PDT "This is about showing people I don't care, my family doesn't want to come on the day, they just don't want to see it, it's too embarrassing for them," says Choudhury. "I want to say to all people going through the same thing that's it's okay – we're going to show the whole world that you can be gay and Muslim." Same-sex marriages have been taking place in the UK since March 2014 after legislation was passed by parliament in 2013. Congrats to the happy couple! NASA’s Hubble captures stunning photo that will make you feel insignificant Posted: 10 Jul 2017 11:37 AM PDT We go about our lives here on planet Earth — doing our jobs, cashing paychecks, and raising families — and most of the time we don't question just how important we are. The jury is still out on whether life has meaning or if it's just a quirk of the universe, but a new photo captured by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope sure will make you feel small.
The image shows the galaxy cluster known by the decidedly clunky name SDSS J1110+6459. It's a massive collection of hundreds of galaxies that are situated some six billion light years away, give or take a few eons. It's a colossal collection of star-building space engines with countless planetary systems and world beyond our imaginations. The question of what is out there — planets hosting intelligent life, or even civilizations far more advanced than our own — may never be answered, but the possibilities are quite literally endless. Of particular note in the image, the bright blue arc shape in the right hand side of the frame. It might appear to be the edge of something, but it's actually a background galaxy whose light has been bent and twisted by the gravity of the galaxy cluster in front of it. That background galaxy, called SGAS J111020.0+645950.8, is particularly hard for scientists to study due to its obscured position, but it's thought to contain newborn stars and lots of unorganized dust. Sometimes it's nice to have a little perspective of our place in the universe. We all still have to go to work on Monday, but at least you'll know exactly how insignificant those TPS reports really are. |

This girl sneezed while taking a selfie and things went hilariously wrong Posted: 10 Jul 2017 07:18 AM PDT Ever wish you could capture more of yourself in pictures? Well, one woman has totally nailed it with an amazing selfie. The shockingly hilarious photo was posted by Reddit user JuddJasper, who explained that he and his girlfriend were using a feature on her phone that basically takes a panoramic selfie. For it to work, you have to stay in the same position, but his girlfriend sneezed, and, well, the results are like something out of The Exorcist. Someone in the comments pointed out that she looks like those comedy/tragedy theater masks, which is spot on, and frankly a lot less disturbing than the other possibility — that she was possessed by some kind of demon just as the photo was taken. Uninvited rattlesnake tries to hitch ride on a passing boat, causes panic Posted: 11 Jul 2017 09:34 AM PDT Free advice from your pals here at Mashable: do not mess with rattlesnakes. Even if they're swimming in a lake and you are "safely" in a boat. SEE ALSO: A snake regurgitated another snake, and both slithered away alive Twitter user Anthony Baciocco tweeted a video of such an instance. While they were out boating on a lake, a rattlesnake lost at sea saw the group's boat as a way out. At first the boaters laughed it off, but then things got very real, very fast. The snake nearly succeeds at getting on the boat, which would have made things roughly 100000000000x worse for the boaters, but luckily they are somehow able to finally get away from what can only be described as the Michael Phelps of rattlesnakes. Though rattlesnake bites are very rarely fatal to humans, they are still extremely venomous and should for sure be avoided at all costs.
