Saudi cleric condemns inter-Muslim conflict ahead of pilgrimage Posted: 25 Aug 2017 12:22 PM PDT By Mahmoud Mourad MECCA (Reuters) - The imam of Mecca's Grand Mosque denounced those who "cause conflict among Muslims" in his last Friday sermon before the annual haj pilgrimage, as rifts widen among Gulf neighbors and wars rage across the Middle East. Saudi Arabia, which hosts and supervises the haj, has with other Arab governments imposed sanctions on Qatar and cut all transport links with the country in recent months, accusing it of supporting Iran and backing Islamist terrorism - charges Doha denies. Relations between Shi'ite Muslim-led Iran and predominately Sunni Saudi Arabia are at their worst in years, with each accusing the other of subverting regional security and supporting opposite sides in conflicts in Syria, Iraq and Yemen. |

Islamic State urges Muslim extremists to wage war in Philippine city of Marawi Posted: 24 Aug 2017 07:35 PM PDT The Islamic State terrorist group has released a new video calling on Muslim extremists in Southeast Asia to wage holy war in the besieged Philippine city of Marawi, while denouncing America and Australia for aiding the country's military. Its release comes as the battle between Isil-linked militants and government forces in the southern Muslim city of Marawi enters its fourth month, fuelling fears that the terrorist group is trying to set up a regional base in Southeast Asia after crushing defeats in the Middle East. In the seven-minute long video, produced by Isil's Al Hayat media centre, a fighter identified as Abul-Yaman from Marawi, appeals to Muslim brothers in East Asia, particularly those in Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Thailand and Singapore to migrate to the city "to perform jihad." The graphic and chilling footage, which depicts dead Philippine soldiers and militant "martyrs" dying in battle, is accompanied by an American-accented narrator who rails against the "subjugation" of Muslims in the Philippines. It opens with scenes of young men engaged in heavy fighting amid the city ruins, brandishing AK-47s through incoming mortar fire and air strikes. Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte gives a pep talk to troops fighting the extremist Maute group in Marawi. Credit: Handout/Reuters In scenes reminiscent of the destruction of Mosul, Iraq, it then switches to the destruction of a Catholic church, showing militants tearing down a cross, smashing statues of the Virgin Mary and ripping up posters of the pope. "We will make revenge...We will be in Rome, in'shallah," shouts a masked militant. The terrorist group then turns its ire on Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, for running to "his masters, the defenders of the cross, America, along with their regional guard dog Australia" to beg them for help. It accuses the Philippines' allies of aiding Duterte in "a malicious air campaign" against the Islamic State. The fighting in Marawi has put Canberra on edge, with rising concerns that the growth of Isil in the region could herald more terrorist attacks in Australia. In June Australia deployed two surveillance planes to Mindanao province, where Marawi is located, to help the Philippine military in the battle. Earlier this week, Australian spy chief Nick Warner also met President Duterte in an unusually public visit to discuss progress. The Philippines regional neighbours are also nervous. Malaysia's top terrorist officer, Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay, told Channel NewsAsia that the new video was "powerful" and would "inflame the passions" of Muslim fanatics. "Since the Marawi siege started, we have seen increased activities from IS cells in Malaysia trying to enter into the southern Philippines," he said. |
Two S.African farmers found guilty in 'coffin assault' case Posted: 25 Aug 2017 08:10 AM PDT A South African judge on Friday found two white farmers guilty of attempted murder after they filmed themselves forcing a black man into a coffin and threatening to burn him alive. Willem Oosthuizen and Theo Martins Jackson, both wearing jackets and ties, were also found guilty of kidnap, intimidation and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. Two clips of footage taken on their mobile phones showed the assailants shoving Mlotshwa down into the wooden coffin and pressing the lid closed with their boots as he begged for his life. |

Machete-wielding man shot dead in Brussels terror attack after attacking soldiers Posted: 25 Aug 2017 04:35 PM PDT A knife-wielding man was shot dead on Friday after wounding a soldier in Brussels, in what authorities called a "terrorist attack". The man, who prosecutors said yelled 'Allahu akbar' (God is greatest) during the violence, was shot by soldiers on a street in the city centre. "We believe that it is a terrorist attack," said a prosecutors' office spokeswoman, who added the attacker "is dead." The incident comes after attacks claimed by the Islamic State group in Spain last week killed 15 people and a knifeman's stabbing spree in Finland left two dead and eight wounded. One of the two soldiers targeted was "slightly" wounded, according to federal prosecutors, who have opened a terror probe of that attack launched around 8:00 pm (1800 GMT). The mayor of Brussels, Philippe Close, told reporters the incident was the work of a "lone individual". Soldiers have been deployed at railway stations and landmark buildings since the Paris terror attacks in 2015, when a link to Brussels was first established. Freddie Martyn, 25, told the Telegraph: "Just picked up my brother from the train station. We saw two to three ambulances, three army dogs, 10 police officers and the same amount of soldiers. "Apparently a guy with a machete attacked one soldier and apparently it all went very quickly. They thought he had a bomb on him. They fired two shots directly at him and took him out." "I got to work five minutes before the bombing at Maelbeek station. "I feel a bit scared by all of this but sadly I am getting quite used to it." The Belgian capital has been on high alert since suicide bombers struck Zavantem Airport and the Maalbeek metro station near the EU quarter in March 2016, killing 32 people and injuring hundreds more. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attacks, which were carried out by the same Brussels-based cell behind the November 2015 suicide bombings and shootings in Paris which left 130 dead. Belgian authorities heaved a sigh of relief in June when a man who tried to bomb a Brussels train station was shot dead by a soldier. Belgian authorities identified the man in that incident as a 36-year-old Moroccan national with the initials O.Z., while local media named him as Oussama Zariouh. No one was injured in the foiled attack at Brussels Central station but officials said the consequences could have been severe had the bomb, full of nails and gas canisters, detonated properly. The man shouted "Allahu Akbar" (God is Greatest) during the attack and prosecutors said he had sympathies for IS. Police found explosive materials in a raid on the home of the suspect in Molenbeek, a Brussels district which has been linked to recent deadly terror plots in France and Belgium. Belgian soldiers and police have repeatedly been the target of attacks in recent months. |
Cuba's Elian Gonzalez hopes for family reconciliation Posted: 25 Aug 2017 04:37 AM PDT Elian Gonzalez, who was once at the center of an international custody battle between his Cuban father and relatives in Miami, has held out an olive branch to his family living in the United States. The 23-year-old was just six when the vessel carrying his mother and others capsized off the coast of Florida in November 1999, leaving Elian -- who was able to grab onto a car inner tube -- the sole survivor. Speaking in an interview with CNN that was broadcast Thursday ahead of a documentary by CNN Films that re-examines his story, he said he'd like to put the bitter past behind him. |

After anti-Muslim attack, Brazilians shower victim with love Posted: 25 Aug 2017 11:07 AM PDT When video went viral of a racist attack on a Muslim street food vendor in Rio de Janeiro, Brazilians wondered gloomily: had their country also been swept up in a global wave of xenophobia? The answer -- a flood of love transforming the humble vendor into a folk hero and, on Thursday, the recipient of a Rio state award -- was a heartwarming no. It all began August 3 when Mohamed Ali Abdelmoatty Kenawy, 33, was manning the cart from which he sells Arab-style meat pies and hummus in the thronging center of Copacabana. |

Scientists have managed to film the adorable super deep-sea snailfish in 4K Posted: 25 Aug 2017 02:52 AM PDT One Japanese organisation has gone where no one else has before. The Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) has filmed a snailfish at a depth of 8,178 meters (26,830 ft) in the Mariana Trench — a record depth for capturing a fish in video footage. SEE ALSO: This newly discovered jellyfish looks like something out of 'Avatar' "We've set a world record for filming a fish at an accurately measured depth," JAMSTEC senior research scientist, Kazumasa Oguri, told the Japan Times. The video was taken with 4K cameras mounted on JAMSTEC's deep-sea research vessel. The purplish-looking Mariana snailfish, who is believed to have visited the trench to feed, was caught on camera, likely attracted by the bait that the scientists placed. These deep sea creatures are known to swim in waters deeper than 7,000 metres. The Japanese institution narrowly beat out efforts by a Chinese academy earlier this year. The Chinese Academy of Sciences had in April filmed a fish at a depth of 8,152 meters in the same trench. According to scientists, it is unlikely that any fish can survive in the oceans at a depth beyond 8,200 metres. No fish has ever been discovered beyond this point. Donald Trump’s eclipse tweet makes no scientific sense, says Apollo 8 author Posted: 25 Aug 2017 08:26 AM PDT President Donald Trump's Twitter feed has never been known for its accuracy but one of his latest retweets has left many shaking their heads. Among a flurry of tweets sent on Thursday morning, the Republican retweeted a meme from a supporter which showed a colour picture of him "eclipsing" a black and white image of Barack Obama in a series of stills. Presumably Mr Trump had meant to suggest his legacy would outshine his predecessor's but others soon pointed out he was presenting himself as a dark object moving to block out the sun – which the planet depends on to live – for a short period of time. |

Civil Rights Groups Sue To Block Indiana From Using Unreliable Process To Purge Voter Rolls Posted: 25 Aug 2017 11:55 AM PDT Civil rights groups are suing Indiana officials to block the state from purging voters from its rolls using a process shown to inaccurately identify voters registered in multiple states. In April, Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb (R) signed legislation authorizing election officials to remove voters from the rolls if they were found to be registered in more than one place. According to the legislation, one of the ways officials can identify people who are registered in more than one place is by using Interstate Crosscheck, a system developed by Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach (R) that 27 states use to compare voter information. |

U.S. retailers hit as immigration worries weigh on Hispanic spending Posted: 24 Aug 2017 04:16 AM PDT By Richa Naidu CHICAGO (Reuters) - Many U.S. Hispanics are venturing out only to buy essential goods and are cutting back on discretionary spending, worried about possible harassment by immigration or law enforcement officials since the election of U.S. President Donald Trump, according to community groups, research firms and retailers. O'Reilly Automotive Chief Executive Gregory Henslee told analysts earlier this month that many of the company's stores with weak second-quarter sales were in Hispanic-dominant areas of the United States. In late July, Target Corp Chief Executive Brian Cornell at a conference referenced a report by retail consultants NPD Group that cited a decline in discretionary spending by Hispanics. |
Mystery Havana embassy attacks hurt 16 US staff Posted: 24 Aug 2017 02:41 PM PDT No fewer than 16 Americans were hurt in what has previously been dubbed an acoustic attack on the US mission in Cuba, the State Department said Thursday. The "unprecedented" attacks came to light last month when Washington warned Cuba it would be held responsible for the safety of US personnel in Havana. US officials have said those hurt appeared to have been targeted by some form of previously unknown acoustic assault, but have not blamed Cuba directly. |
Britain will not pay 'a penny more' than it thinks right to leave EU: Boris Johnson Posted: 25 Aug 2017 06:59 AM PDT Britain will pay "not a penny more, not a penny less" than what the government thinks its legal obligations are to the European Union as the country leaves the bloc, foreign minister Boris Johnson said on Friday. Talking to BBC Radio Four, Johnson said his comment that the EU could "go whistle" on its demands for payment was in response to being asked whether Britain would pay "100 billion euros or pounds", and not a suggestion that the government would not pay. |
The Galaxy Note 8 just launched, but Samsung already has something better in the works Posted: 25 Aug 2017 08:37 AM PDT There are only two real reasons to buy the Galaxy Note 8 right now, since screen size isn't what really matters anymore. The Galaxy Note 8 is just marginally bigger than the Galaxy S8+, after all, and it sports the exact same specs. But the phone does come with a built-in S Pen stylus and the associated software suite, and it also packs a dual-lens rear camera the likes of which Samsung fans have never seen before on a Galaxy phone. But if the Galaxy Note 8 seems boring to you and you're not too thrilled about getting a bigger device just for the camera experience, you should know Samsung is already hard at work on even better phones.
According to well-sourced insider Ming-Chi Kuo, who's always dishing out details on unreleased Apple and Samsung gear, Samsung is already working on next year's Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 handsets. The Galaxy S9 is rumored to feature the same dual lens camera as the Galaxy Note 8, Kuo explained in note seen by 9to5Google. That's hardly surprising, considering Samsung wanted a dual camera on the Galaxy S8, but couldn't pull things together in time. What stopped Samsung from equipping the Galaxy S8 with a dual lens camera, according to reports, was the fingerprint sensor. Placing it under the screen in time for the Galaxy S8's launch was not possible, and Samsung hasn't perfected the technology in time for the Note 8's launch either. That's why it had to move the sensor to the back of the Galaxy S8 and scrap the prototypes that featured a dual camera to make room for the sensor. The Galaxy S9 will still retain the rear-facing fingerprint sensor, as Samsung will debut under-display fingerprint sensing tech only later next year, according to Kuo's report. The Galaxy Note 9 will introduce the feature, and Kuo says that Samsung is developing the in-screen fingerprint scanner with the help of Himax and Egis. |
